Get Michelle to Japan for surgery.

Help Michelle get her life back and cure her hemifacial spasm.

Tauranga, Bay Of Plenty

Michelle has been diagnosed with a rare condition called hemifacial spasm, where a blood vessel is pressing against a facial nerve in her brain, causing uncontrollable spasms to one half of her face and noises in her ear. This is a progressive disorder and will only get worse over time. Already the condition makes it difficult to see at times, hard to sleep, and causes a lot of stress in both work and social situations.

Because it is rare, there are only two neurosurgeons in NZ who have done enough surgeries on this to be considerable options, however they guarantee around 60-70% success. Whereas, a highly regarded neurosurgeon in Japan has close to a 100% success rate and uses a different technique. As it is a risky brain surgery, Michelle wants to have the surgery once and do it right. As a mum of two preschool-aged children, the risks in New Zealand just feel too high.

Michelle has comprehensive medical insurance in New Zealand but they are refusing to cover any costs, even though the surgery in Japan is a quarter of the price of New Zealand with far better outcomes and lower risks.

While Michelle and Rowan are saving as much as they can, they’d really appreciate any help. They also know that life is expensive for everyone so please don’t feel any pressure.

Michelle and I have 4 year old daughters who are best friends at daycare. I have gotten to know Michelle and her family over the last couple years and believe they deserve any help possible to navigate this rare condition.

Use of funds

All funds raised will be spent on the cost of surgery in Japan including pre and post operative testing, surgery, and the hospital stay.

Surgery booked for October  11 April 2026

Hi everyone,

Michelle here. Firstly, thank you all SO much for your contributions. I’ve been overwhelmed by your generosity and felt so loved. My spasms have their good and bad days and I’m pleased (and nervous) to say surgery has been booked in for late October in Shizuoka, Japan.

Thought I’d share a wee video of my winky, twitchy face so you can see what you’re helping me fix.

Feel free to reshare this page at any time, anything helps so much.

Thanks - Michelle

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
