Get Mike the unfunded treatment he needs

  • Update from Mike, Feb 2021

      1 February 2021

Hi all. Well it is long overdue for an update from Turid and I. As many of you will know, unfortunately my immunotherapy was unsuccessful. We gave it our best shot but had no positive response and, in fact, it was the worst treatment experience I have had to date!

So, I have now stopped all non-palliative treatment and hope for as much time as possible with my beautiful, intelligent, all-around wonderful wife and the amazing children we have been blessed with. My health is ok at the moment with the doctors patching things up as we go along (mostly radiotherapy to the bone mets).

Again Turid and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity, kindness and thoughts on this journey of ours. It means so so much. Obviously the page has been closed but we will update you by the other, various communication means at our disposal. Sending all our love. Mike.

The Heiler family have been completely overwhelmed by the give-a-little response. It seems ironic that during a cancer journey gratitude is an emotion that is felt so deeply. Thank you all so much for the generosity, the comments and the well wishes. We are feeling so much love.

Mike is about to have his 3rd round of the liquid gold, nivolamab. The last 6 weeks have been an opportunity for Mike to experience every side effect of both the liquid gold and the little golden pills- fatigue, rashes, loss of appetite, voice issues amongst a range of others. A little excitement everyday, finding out which will win 'side-effect of the day'.

Yesterday was a clear winner with the side-effect possibly due to a new tumour in his bladder. Mike will have some blood tests and scans but will at this stage be going ahead with round 3 of immunotherapy. We have been hoping that the fact Mike has experienced a good number of side effects means the cancer is also taking a bit of a hiding from the immunotherapy, but we won't really know until just before Christmas.

Loads of thanks and love to all.

    Turid

We are truly humbled by the generosity shown by all of you and, to be honest, I am struggling to find the words to express our gratitude. When I first looked at the website and the early donations, I burst into tears.

It means so much to us that, not only will we now be able to trial the drug combination, but also to receive the messages of love and support from you wonderful lot (friends and friends we haven't met yet). So thank you again for giving our family the chance of more time together. Love Mike and Turid.
