Girls Rock! Pōneke is a forward-thinking programme which aims to provide a space for creativity and inclusivity in which music can flourish.
Wellington
Girls Rock! Pōneke is a week-long music-based school holiday programme for female, trans, and gender non-conforming young people aged 12-17 years old. At Girls Rock! Pōneke, music is the medium through which these young people can build confidence, life-long connections, and champion social change in their communities.
After a hugely successful programme in 2019, the July 2020 school holidays will see Wellington host its second Girls Rock! programme. We received incredible feedback about this programme from participants and parents in 2019 and have had significant interest in continuing the programme in 2020. We are committed to ensuring young people from across the Wellington region have access to this positive event which develops communication skills, teamwork and leadership, confidence, critical thinking and encourages creative expression.
During the programme participants undertake music lessons, band practices and workshops, culminating in a showcase where participants perform an original composition in front of family and friends. The workshops and lessons will be delivered by highly regarded members of the music industry.
The funds raised from Give a Little will go towards paying Band Mentors and Instrument Instructors.
Our Covid-19 contingency plan: Girls Rock! goes digital.
In the event of Massey University campus being closed due to Covid-19, the July camp will be going digital! We are working on both possible outcomes to ensure that everyone enrolled in the programme can rock out, participate in songwriting, instrument lessons and more - no matter what!
We will be utilising digital platforms so participants can video in and take part in exciting workshops, songwriting challenges and instrument lessons run by highly regarded New Zealand musicians. We believe it is important to support New Zealand musicians with paid employment now more than ever, as live performance (the bread and butter income for many) is currently on hold for the foreseeable future.
Your donation will go towards paying Band Mentors and Instrument Instructors and help make a difference in empowering the the lives of young people and the future of New Zealand Music.
