Young ladies who left Gloriavale say they were exploited and were working in conditions akin to modern-day slavery? The court will decide.
Timaru, Canterbury
I am a mum of 11 children, and we left Gloriavale 2.5 years ago. I was always concerned about the dangerous work environment, and the injuries my girls and others suffered in the kitchen and laundry at Gloriavale. The girls were working gruelling hours, without adequate breaks and holidays and no pay.
For decades young girls have done very early morning starts (3- 4am) and very long days, and three of my own sisters suffered terrible workplace injuries with burnt feet, and inadequate after-care.
There is a court case during September 2022 to show that the girls were not volunteers, but rather employees who were exploited.
Funds are urgently needed to support the leavers in this epic battle.
There was a Boys' Employment Court Case in May, and they won! The judge ruled there was forced labour of children from 6 years - 17 years old. We are hopeful for the same success with the Girls' Employment case.
We are confident the court proceeding will help to protect the rights of these New Zealanders who don't have a choice and who work and live in conditions akin to modern-day slavery.
Help us improve the lives of people who have left Gloriavale, and for those who are still inside.
Many of my family and friends are involved in this court case.
It will be used for the associated costs of fighting for justice. It's a 3-week long trial and there is a lot of travel, accommodation, counselling, babysitting & food costs for the large number of witnesses.
Case extends into October! 6 September 2022
Wow! The support has been overwhelming. Many thanks. The judge has realised this case needs more time to be heard and has requested two more weeks (on top of the three initially locked in). This increases the expenses for accommodation and food for the large team of witnesses and lawyers. We are overwhelmed by the love and beautiful messages.
