Sheryl will be home tomorrow. Still a lot of healing to do But she will be home.
Just another thing to hold up Sheryl's recovery. Having trouble with the stoma bag leaking and burning her skin where it needs to stick to and making it very painful to change every couple of hours. Last week it was she was not getting enough fluids because the small bit of small bowl that she has working doesn't extract as much fluid as the rest of her bowl would. Very trying times at the moment.
Sheryl is healing so well that they doctors are amazed. She is slowly getting more mobile although only 4 or 5 steps with the aid of a walking frame to date. I was talking to ACC the other day and was told that it would be 4 months or more for them to approve our claim or not. If 20% or more was caused be previous surgery's leading to this lot they would not except the claim.
A big thank you to all that have supported so far. Its amazing how quick costs add up. Like petrol to visit Sheryl most days. So far its been about 60 trips there and back (92km) = 5520Km. I use about 9L per 100km @ $2.70 per Lt = $1,490. Its good to see Sheryl now happier and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Sheryl has been able to sit upright on the side of her bed, has been standing with the help of the easy-stand and is starting to eat more. she is very keen to come home, although that is closer now there is still some work to do. She is so strong.
Sheryl is now in ward 10. She is almost half way to recovering from the surgical F--- up. She has been able to stand up in a easy stand for a short time.
For those how don't know what happened to put Sheryl here is a brief description. It started with what was meant to be a 2--3 hour operation to remove a cancer in her bowel. The cancer was removed and no more cancer seen. BUT the surgeon managed to nick Sheryl's bladder and then fixed it, then she nicked the spleen twice and repaired that. It is now 6 hours in theater and I got a phone call from the surgeon to say the above and that she was missing a swab so were x-raying and CT scanning Sheryl to try and find it. later the surgeon told me she "went back in through a key hole and had a good poke around and found on top of Sheryl's spleen". By this time 8+hours had passed and Sheryl's kidneys had stopped working. She was sent to ICU and was very unwell. Sheryl was getting worse over the next 5 days and in a lot of pain. On day 5 they gave her a CT scan and found that when the surgeon had poked around looking for the swab she had punctured Sheryl's small bowel (intestine] and it had been leaking inside her. So it was in to surgery for a major opp to remove all the infected tissue and they had to remove some of the small bowel. We were told that she could die and there was a 50/50 chance of that. She crashed twice during that opp but made it through. The small bowel is now attached to a bag on her side, she has three wounds on her belly that you could fit a fist into and one center line from her lower ribs to below her belly button.
Its been 42 days in the intensive care unit For Sheryl and we are hopeful that she will be in the rehab or surgical ward very soon. She has and is being looked after very very well by the talented and caring staff of ICU. I cant thank them enough for the care they are showing to Sheryl. The good news is that her kidneys are almost back to normal and her wounds are healing well. The hard work for her will continue as she regains her strength and ability to Stand then walk. And then hopefully Home witch will need some modifications. At this time Sheryl's left leg is not working and we are hoping it is not because of her MS as she has been unable to take her MS meds because of they lower her immunity.
Sheryl and I spent some time with family on the helly pad with Sheryl in the cloud chair. watching a scooter be put together for Felix, and Me taking Felix for walks up and down the corridor. unfortunately no Xmass dinner or treats for Sheryl as she is one a very strict diet. It is going to be some time before Sheryl is out of ICU and a lot of hard work and willpower before She is back on her feet. I would like to thank all who have donated as it will help with some up coming costs to make Sheryl's recovery go a bit smoother, So THANK YOU.
