Grunta's Vw Beetle Restoration

  • Grunta's health update

      9 August 2013

Hi everyone, Ifm sorry to say this is not good news to share. Grantfs health in the last week has deteriorated severely. Grant contracted Pneumonia last week, it came on suddenly and he was admitted to hospital. It has been a long week of trying to treat and lessen the symptoms but the medicine has had little effect. This has meant that Grant has now been moved to Hospice for full time care and the likelihood of him returning home is very minimal. Further tumours were found during an MRI scan last week also. There is no further treatment over pain management that can be given to him. So now itfs about trying to make him as comfortable as possible. Desiree is at Grantfs bedside- She is amazing and is incredibly strong given the circumstances. You Rock lovely. The family have most things in hand but your support is so welcome. Please feel free to post up on the Facebook VW resto page anything you like for Grant and Desiree to show your support. The project will continue regardless of the coming weeks outcome with Grant's health and we are beginning to draft up plans to deliver the car to Desiree and her family via a car run with as many hot rods, muscle cars and of course VWs as we can muster with a view to do a final fundraiser for either hospice or The Cancer society which we hope to do in approximately 6-8 weeks as the car still has about that much work to be completed. Erica.

      23 June 2013

Hi All, Sheesh where does time go? Sorry for the delay of this update. Truth be told we have had a long six weeks of sitting on our hands awaiting the return of the bug from the panel beaters but it has been worth the wait. 227 hours of work has gone into the car and it got wheeled over to paint shop on Thursday to start the prep for paint. We could not be more happy to see it progressing. Unfortunately the chasing of rust meant the deadline of the wedding in May was not hit as the car was still in pieces but the bridal party still arrived in style courtesy of muscle car owning friends and the bride was early! We have been incredibly lucky to gather sponsorship for parts from Josie at Qualitat European Motors Ltd, Wurth NZ, Blackwoods NZ and a huge hand from Repco NZ which has ensured the project can continue. Our project featured in the June edition of NZ Petrolhead thanks to Alistair the editor. Donations have continued to roll in over the past month and have seen our total kitty rise to just over $5000 including proceeds from a phenomenal cake stall fund raiser held at RNZAF base Ohakea where Grant works. It has been a mind-blowing experience with supporters coming out and putting their hands up where they can to help. A brief update about Grant also is in order. Grant was in amazing spirits leading up to the wedding, even so much as getting on his motorbike and coming out to work on some of those cracker late summer days we had which was amazing considering what his body and treatments had thrown at him. Admittedly he did mainly come out to eat his lunch, have a gas bag and then go home. Still to see him in the workshops in his overalls was testament to what a guy he is. He was diagnosed with a chest infection in the week leading up to the wedding but come the wedding night he was up and dancing until midnight. John Travolta eat your heart out! Post wedding has seen Grantfs health take a downward turn and he will be undergoing radio therapy on Tuesday afternoon for three new tumours recently found on his back. He is a tough guy but admits he is tired and sore but determined to not let the cancers get him down. He is of the mind that even though he is fighting a losing battle damned if he is not going to keep jumping each hurdle thrown up in his way and he is fighting. Married life is suiting the Sutherland household very well. Baby Grant JNR is getting bigger and cuter, if thatfs possible, every time we catch up with Des and the babes. Their house is in the throws of renovations as well so happy, crazy, typical family life is par for the course. So going forward we are currently sitting with no dollars left in the bank due to the panel beating invoice. But never being ones to dwell on a bad situation have come up with a plan. I am currently in the throws of organising a fundraiser with Sileni Vineyards in the Hawkefs Bay to cover the final shortfall of the project which we are predicting will be approximately $4000 (100 cases of wine to sell) to get the bug driving and legal. So if you love wine or know of a wine lover point them in my direction! Thanks again for your support. Your help is amazing. Erica and Trev.

      11 May 2013

The past few weeks have been a blur of late nights for all involved and amazing good news coming in from everywhere. I will pop a proper run down up later this weekend but for now enjoy our latest installation of support; hitting the front page of the Wanganui Chronicle to spread the word and give a public thank you to all that have supported us so far. It is incredibly humbling. Thank you to all that have had a part in making this happen. -Erica. http://www.wanganuichronicle.co.nz/news/battlers-old-beetle-juiced-up-for-bride/1864228/

      13 April 2013

Phew! Its been a manic fortnight! Thank you to all our lovely donors, our likers on the FB page and well wishes out and about. A quick overview of progress to date: Beetle picked up from storage and reunited with all its stratified parts from various sheds and hiding places. Strip down complete, panel work beginning this weekend and hopefully will be complete by the end of this week, rust is not a crime but it does take time to remedy. Brent from Bugs and Buses in Wanganui has thrown his hat in the ring to tickle up the engine, a few curveballs have been encountered and a new plan has been hatched to get it ticking along. Upholstery king Shaun Terrey also of Wanganui has stepped up to take on the interior makeover so we are stoked to have him onboard. Mark of The Metric Nut in CHCH has also be very forthcoming with a great discount on spares needed and we look forward to working with him again as he has been integral for the work on our dubs- Thanks mate. The extreme team are pulling together behind Trev to lend a hand where they can, so to all those guys- cheers so much. We have a few more pots on the boil of vendors that may be able to lend a hand and have had a positive reply from VW NZ so will see what comes of these leads in the coming week. Finally a huge thanks again to all our wonderful supporters and esp to the great team at Givealittle. We couldn't do it without you and we are very humbled. Grunta hasn't stopped blushing since this all started. We are posting up pictures most days on FB so hit the page and check it out. High Fives and likes are always welcomed. Have a great week, Erica and Trev.

If you know Grunta then you know he is a Vee Dub nut from way back. You also know cancer is giving him a hard run but he working hard to kick it in the nuts. He has beat bowel cancer, was kicking lung cancer and has just had an operation to remove a tumour in his brain. This amazing guy has a young family of six cool kids and the most amazing partner, the gorgeous Desiree, who just gave birth to their 6th babe, Grant Jnr on the same day Grunta was admitted to hospital and it was discovered he had a tumour in his brain. Being the guy he is has come through surgery and is still fighting. On top of the good vibes and well wishes to him and his family we can help finish his 1956 Oval Beetle project which understandably has been shelved for now and have it ready for his wedding later this year.
