Hand-rearing orphaned baby birds

  • Tūī time!

This tiny tūī was rescued from Henderson, having fallen from its nest, with the rescuer unable to locate its parents.

Admitted to our dedicated nursery, it is currently living inside a warm incubator, as chicks this young are unable to thermoregulate.

Orphaned chicks at this early nestling stage require feeds once every 30 mins! Busy work for our amazing Birdcaring team <3

In a few weeks, we look forward to this cutie learning to self feed and regulate its own body temperature.

With daily health monitoring, it will then graduate to Tūī intermediate school- aviaries modelling their native habitats. These outdoor aviaries are designed to help develop flight skills, as it also learns to forage independently... in preparation for its return to the wild!

Thank you wonderful whaanau, for supporting their nursery recovery journeys! We could not do this important mahi without you <3

This wee Matuku moana White-faced heron was admitted to our nursery 6 days ago. The patient, #26-886, was triaged as shivering, lethargic, dehydrated, not standing or walking. But, our clinical team areHere On a mission!

The patient quickly stabilised, and now, has improved mobility, and has started self-feeding sardines suspended in water!

Thanks everyone for supporting this wonderful mahi.

  • Mystery duckling- potential Pateke?

Our nursery is quickly filling up with orphaned chicks. On the 22 Sept we admitted this 29 gram cutie, rescued from Blockhouse bay. It's fully brown down feathers suggest it may be a Pāteke Brown teal- one of NZ's rarest ducklings!

It is growing well, next door to enclosures of orphaned Pūtangitangi Paradise shelducks (also endemic). Soon, as more mature feathers develop, we will be able to confirm its identity. Stay tuned for their progress in our nursery.
