We are in a financial property pickle. Please help!
Auckland
Our bookshop was founded on a passion for books; a store of magical pleasure and surprise, a repository of knowledge and entertainment. The books in the shop are complemented by the store itself - a magnificent Category 1 Historic century old brick delight with both subtle & obvious historic links to its original owner and her faith, the only Catholic Saint in Australasia, Saint Mary McKillop. It is both a cultural icon and an economic anachronism with a unique bookish community atmosphere.
Many thousands of customers from around the world have visited as children, later as students, and now bring their children to experience our treasured shop. Hundreds have worked with us over the last 42 years and helped shape the shop.
Unfortunately we are in crisis. The Bishop of Auckland wants to sell St Mary’s for millions. Our only hope is to try and raise funds to buy the building and restore its glory or SOMEHOW HELP US RE-ESTABLISH ELSEWHERE. The bookshop has been a labour of love which pays our wages and gives many people of all ages pleasure.
Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. Please pass this on to anyone you know who may be interested, particularly any philanthropic millionaires.
Regards, Warwick and the team at Hard to Find Bookshop
Our target is a moving one - the cv on the building is $4.8 mil (but it isn’t worth close to that really).
The bottom line is if we have to move it will cost at least $100k to relocate all the books we have stored (500k) and several kilometres of shelving.
Hard to Find Bookshop on the move 16 January 2026
We are now definitely moving... but the good news is that we have a new location lined up only a few hundred metres from where we are now. We will have more books than ever, and the move begins... NOW (!)... but the shop remains open until the end of February in our current location. Your help has made our survival possible, and all the team are very very grateful for your ongoing support. meanwhile, come buy heaps of books so qwe don't have to move so many :-)
