Fundraising for Harper to have his own pool.
In October 2016, my nephew Harper Ahern was 4 years old when he was unexpectedly diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).
DMD is a severe neuromuscular disorder in which muscles progressively waste away and mobility loss is certain. Whilst there is heaps of research and trials in place, there is currently no cure for DMD and primary treatment consists of steroids and physical therapy to try and prolong the onset of the disease.
How quickly and how severe Harper’s condition deteriorates, we don’t yet know. Harper has lost his mobility and requires an electric wheelchair full-time. His dreams and needs are similar to other boys his age. He loves cooking, waterslides, playing at the beach, being part of a soccer team, bush walks and getting up to mischief! Harper feels free when he is in the water and it can help his condition by providing mild resistance for low-grade muscle work, respiratory exercise to maintain or increase capacity and breath control and provide a great space to socialise and interact with others. It is my dream for Harper to have his own pool to help him feel free, help his health and so he can create precious memories.
My darling Nephew.
