When our dad Shane suffered a major heart attack, everything changed in an instant. He then suffered two cardiac arrests and was placed on life support. We were faced with the very real possibility that we were going to lose him.

It's a miracle he survived.

But surviving was only the beginning.

Shane woke up to a completely different life. He can no longer walk.

For Shane, a former athlete who has always been strong, active and fiercely independent, losing the ability to walk has been soul-destroying. The physical loss is enormous, but so is the emotional impact of suddenly needing help with everyday life.

Shane now requires 24-hour residential and nursing care while he faces a long rehabilitation journey. He needs support with daily care, mobility and safety, along with ongoing rehabilitation to give him the best possible chance of regaining independence.

Over the next two years, he will need rehabilitation, specialist appointments, psychological support, mobility equipment, transport and additional care that may not be funded.
