Helga's Hat in Hand - Her last chance

Hi our names are Liam, Ros & Justine. We are asking for your help to save our beautiful friend Helga. In 2011, Helga found a lump. She was just 40 years old. Strong and brave, Helga chose alternative therapies for six months before having a mastectomy. The results were incredible, the surgeon said the lump had shrunk considerably!

Eight years of fighting, and more than 40 chemotherapy treatments later, there's not much Helga hasn't been through as she shared humorous cancer updates of hospitals, doctors and nurses, that have left us laughing, and crying, as we fought with her from far and near. Her positivity and unwavering belief that carried her through the blindsiding effects of each treatment, left us humbled. She has shown us, that after every storm, there is a beautiful rainbow. Helga is that rainbow.

Now, after eight years of winning the fight, the storm clouds gather again. The tumors in Helga's spine, liver and lungs have started to advance. A new cancer treatment is needed. Just one. That's all it takes. The treatments Helga needs are expensive, and unbelievably, are not government funded.

If rainbows brighten up your day after rain… if warriors are strong and brave… then Helga is our rainbow warrior. She is a mum to two teenagers who need their mother. She is a wife to a husband who never imagined life without her. She is a daughter. She is a friend. She is our love and our light.

Helga is faced with two options. The first is to follow medical treatment prescribed by her NZ doctors that involve drugs that have a very low chance of success and some horrible side effects that would result in a very poor quality of life. Also this treatment would cost in excess of $130,000.

The second option is to follow an alternative therapy that is not available in NZ but is in her native country South Africa. It is called Carol's Oil (see https://carolsoil.com/ ). This requires her to leave her family behind and travel to South Africa for 3 - 6 months for treatments. The funds raised are to support her treatment costs and travel and accommodation over this period. It is anticpated that this will cost in the region of $60,000. This treatment is what Helga identified when she was first diagnosed and now that the standard medicines are no longer effective Hegla wishes to persue this option as it reflects on her personal values and beliefs.
