Help a student midwife finish their degree
Wellington
I am so privileged to be able to study midwifery and to have found the career I will dedicate myself to. However this is a costly degree, we spend a lot of time on placement (2400 hours over 3/4 years) and on call 24/7 for some placement blocks on top of our academic work. A loan from study link has paid for my first 3 years, however, I now have to fund my final year without any assistance. This is because I have reached my lifetime loan allowance and midwifery is not legislatively included in the loan extension criteria. I will have no access to a loan, allowance, or loan living costs.
I need $10,000 for the university fees and money to help with living costs while I am on placement. In my final year, I will complete 1000 hours of placement, during this time I will also be working to pay rent, bills, petrol, and hospital car parking (students do not get staff parking).
I have had the absolute honour to work with so many amazing midwives, nurses, and healthcare professionals, as well as incredible pregnant people and their whānau. I want to be able to finish my degree so I can work as a qualified midwife and provide a much-needed service in Aotearoa and give back to all those who have helped me through this so far.
I want to also take this opportunity to acknowledge my cohort at Victoria University, the lecturers, midwives, and student midwives all over Aotearoa who put so much effort into everything they do and still have enough in their cup left to support their peers.
