Help Be Manaias Guardian

Hi all,

We are asking for help in funding a Guardian Solution Epilepsy Mat for our baby.

Manaia is 16 months old and was diagnosed with epilepsy at 4 months old. She has Tonic Clonic and Nocturnal Tonic Clonic seizures.

We have been advised by her Paediatrician that she has a 1 in 1000 chance of SUDEP- Sudden Death From Epilepsy in Sleep. Due to her having nocturnal seizures now.

The Guardian Mat is a high tech epilepsy alarm that monitors breathing, breaths per minute, spasms, moisture output- for vomiting or incontinence, records data to an app and sound.

Manaia's nocturnal seizures start out with a rapid change in her breathing, before her body seizes and she spasms. This is then followed by a weak high pitched scream and vomiting. Her longest seizure to date has been 13mins+.

She is on medication and being monitored and followed closely by Starship and Waikato Hospital specialists.

This mat gives us the peace of mind that we won’t loose our daughter to SUDEP. It alerts us to her seizures and we’re able to catch them as soon as they start, as apposed to only waking up to her high pitch cry, by that time she’s already2-3 mins into a seizure.

Epilepsy is not a medically funded disability in NZ, even though it can be debilitating.

Hence why we are asking for your help, in raising funds for this medical equipment for Manaia.
