“A thumbtack changed Carlos. lost his leg to a hidden infection and is fighting to rebuild his life. He needs support to get stable again.''
Whangarei, Northland
My name is Carlos Martin. I was born in Papua New Guinea, raised in New Zealand from age seven, and grew up active, independent, and passionate about rugby. I later followed in my father’s footsteps and became an engine reconditioner.
In June 2025, my life changed overnight. While moving house and cutting firewood, I discovered a thumbtack embedded in my left foot that I’d never felt. Within days I developed severe pain up my leg and went to A&E. I expected to lose a couple of toes. Instead, I woke from surgery to a below-knee amputation.
Three and a half weeks later, my healing stalled and surgeons reopened my stump, removing more bone and resetting my recovery. In August I began an intense 8-week course of Vancomycin for necrotising fasciitis, one of the deadliest infections there is. Treatment was later extended and shifted to a PICC line straight to my heart. After months of antibiotics, I was suddenly told by text on 9 November that I was “no longer required” for tests or meds.
During all this, I lost my housing and even my vehicle was impounded. ACC placed me in respite, but that support ends soon and I don’t know where I’ll go next. I’m fighting to rebuild after losing my leg, my stability, and nearly my life.
“Funds will help Carlos cover unfunded recovery costs, prosthetic needs, transport to appointments, home adjustments, and support for his kids while he gets back on his feet after a sudden amputation and months of brutal treatment.”
