Thanks to your generous donation, we got the Suzuki Swift ready to drive more success of young people, migrants and resettled communities.

We'd love to stay connected with you and we hope you can follow our Community Impact stories through pcds.co.nz | https://www.facebook.com/drivePCDS/

Please do share with your family and friends the best reasons to choose Puketapapa Community Driving School (PCDS):

Our team of qualified driving instructors and interpreters offers road code workshops, lessons in dual-control vehicles as well as a driving simulator which helps first timers gain confidence before venturing onto public roads. We are a local community-owned social enterprise. When you book with us you’re also helping local refugees and migrants learn to drive. For every paid driving lesson, we can give a subsidised lesson to a former refugee facing multiple barriers to getting driver licence.

Heartfelt thanks from our diverse communities who will greatly benefit from your support.

  • THANK YOU ALL FROM PUKETAPAPA COMMUNITY DRIVING SCHOOL

      5 November 2021

Four years ago at the launch of Puketapapa Community Driving School (PCDS) we cut the ribbon on our first practice car with Harry Doig, former chair of Puketapapa Local Board. Thanks to all your generous donation, we'd love to gather in thanksgiving and cut the ribbon on our new practice car once we get the green light.

PCDS is turning 4 this December so we'd like to share FANTASTIC 4 community stories on the importance of getting driver licence. Here are the feedback from four learners who chose Puketapapa Community Driving School - knowing that our social enterprise mission is to use the income from fully-paid driving lessons to give subsidised lessons for former refugees especially single mothers facing multiple barriers to getting licence.

Serene: I was able to help my mum during lockdown. My mum is a health worker and she can’t take bus all the time. So it was my duty to drop her to work. Now I can drive alone buy some groceries and stuff. This is a little bit help for my family. Driving was my first step to help my family. Without the driving licence I was dependent on my family. Now I can help them to go anywhere and buy some stuff.

Nina: I’ve been able to help my family more like getting groceries, dropping off my brother and picking up from school. From a personal perspective it has given a lot of confidence. As a young person, whenever you are with your friends, there is a stigma of you still having your learner’s. I chose to enrol at PCDS as I always thought the social enterprise side of the business is amazing. The buy one and give one for someone with refugee background and struggling to afford a driving lesson was really cool. I really like the fulfilment it gave me that my money would be going towards someone in need and potentially make a difference in their lives.

Jojo: Getting a licence is very helpful while ’m studying in Uni and working. In NZ the public transport is not as good with other countries. Especially for the buses you have to wait, unlike other countries its frequent. Driver licence here is a must.

Cristine: Before I just ride a bus. Sometimes the bus would take a while so it was hard for me especially going home late. Now I’m working as a support worker. I drive a lot going to my clients’ homes. Excellent cause, you are really helping the migrants and refugees to learn to drive.

THANK YOU AGAIN to each and everyone who pitched in to help us get new practice car so we can have more community success stories in 2022!

  • HELP US HELP MORE REFUGEES TO GAIN INDEPENDENCE AFTER LOCKDOWN

      8 September 2021

"A driver's licence is important to me because I am a student and responsible for my children. You can't imagine the hassles of getting kids to school and going to university daily, plus using Uber for emergency and hospital appointments. Now things are much easier. I feel free to move anytime and anywhere. I can't forget last year's lockdown. It was hard to find someone to take me to buy food and supplies." - message from a single mother who got restricted licence through the Open Road Refugee Driver Training Programme and Puketapapa Community Driving School (PCDS)

THANK YOU again to everyone who pitched in, help us reach our goal by sharing our Givealittle page to your circle of friends.

  • International Day of Charity: Pledge to Support our Work for Migrants and Refugees

      5 September 2021

International Day of Charity - Today 5 September is about honouring the life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace."

Looking for a registered charity to support? Your donation of $5, $50 or more to Migrant Action Trust will enable us to support more migrants and refugee whānau after lockdown.

Over the last few weeks, we've been reaching out to our Afghani whānau who are extremely distressed about the safety and survival of their loved ones in Afghanistan. Through the Action Station petition and letters to Government, Migrant Action Trust joined the urgent plea for New Zealand to take in substantially more refugees from Afghanistan.

As a registered charity supporting refugees from arrival to integration, Migrant Action Trust runs free English and computer tutorials, pre-employment support and community driver mentoring programmes.

Check out to pledge regularly or volunteer for Migrant Action Trust https://www.migrantactiontrust.org/

In the last three years, we have been delivering trauma-sensitive driver training for Afghani and other refugees to support their settlement process. Help refugees gain independence through Puketapapa Community Driving School.

THANK YOU again to everyone who pitched in, help us reach our goal by sharing our Givealittle page to your circle of friends.

  • Helping Solo Mums and Resettled Communities Overcome Lockdown Challenges

      27 August 2021

It's the 3rd Friday night since our two practice cars were stolen and smashed. Lockdown further delayed action on our two cars, but everyday we are grateful for all the heartwarming messages of support and generous donations. Big THANK YOU to each and everyone! Sharing again short video of some of our learners whose lives became easier during and after lockdown. They're the best reminders for us to keep going so we can help more especially solo mums and former refugees to gain independence, reduce social isolation, increase employability, road safety and community wellbeing. Special thanks to folks at Mutual Aid ChCh who have been supporting a number of charities, thanks for choosing Migrant Action Trust - Puketapapa Community Driving School this week!

Najiba, an elderly Afghani widow, passed her restricted test in time before her learner licence expired in February 2020. Living alone has been challenging for her, especially during Covid lockdown. We hope to help more Afghan learners who are extremely distressed with the current situation in Afghanistan.

Afghan refugees are among the 200+ urgent referrals we aim to support every year. Thanks to everyone for giving a little and please keep sharing our page.

After lockdown, getting more practice cars will help more refugees increase employability, safety and well-being by being able to drive safely and legally.

  • $7,000 from generous donors in 7 days

This year one of our biggest success stories was helping Amino get her restricted licence. Being deaf didn't stop her from learning. Thanks to our most patient instructors and volunteer mentor Kevin, who offered sign language support, Amino steadily gained confidence through the extra practice sessions in our Toyota IST that was stolen and smashed.

Huge thanks to 116 generous donors we're almost halfway to our goal! Thanks everyone for helping us get back on the road as soon as possible so we can help more refugee-background learners who face literacy, language and financial barriers.
