I am creating an opportunity for our friends and family around the world to contribute, as they can, to help the people of Tavea rebuild.
International
The eye of cyclone Yasa passed over the island of Tavea on the 17th December 2020, causing devastation to the island and to the sole village on this piece of hidden paradise. The villagers all sought shelter in the church building whilst enormous destruction was wrought on the surrounding homes.
A handful of houses have withstood the cyclone effects but many have been either completely destroyed or substantially damaged. There is no fresh water supply. The crops have been decimated.
This has arisen on the back of COVID19 which has itself limited the government's resources and capacity to respond to this national disaster.
These funds will be put into an account in Fiji that will be set up for the sole purpose of contributing to the rebuild and restoration of the village of Tavea. My wife will transfer all funds from the account that we have set up for this, to a Fiji BSP account (set up by my cousin Mavis Toganivalu-Clerke).
The tiny island of Tavea has a single village - also called Tavea. This is the village of my paternal ancestors for many generations. I have been supporting the village for a number of years through the development of beekeeping.
Materials for the rebuild of Tavea represent a substantial cost. Specific planning to ensure all buildings are to specifications that will optimise outcomes in future inclement weather is critical. These funds will contribute to these outcomes.
First Update on Tavea Island Post TC Yasa 1 February 2021
Thank you very much to all who have generously contributed thus far. I visited Tavea from the 18-20th Jan. The people are in good heart. Of the 46 homes in the village, 6 were totally destroyed, and a further 13 sustained substantial damage. Amazingly, none of the 206 lives were either lost or harmed, although the ordeal was terrifying with unprecedented high winds from 10am until after midnight. The clean-up and rebuild is well underway. I am hoping to get an American builder (now a local) and colleague up there to help build one or two cyclone-proof homes alongside of the village builders from Tavea as well as from surrounding villages. In this way a transfer of knowledge and skills can occur, with the outcome of capacity building taking place. In this way quality builds can hopefully become 'the norm' and the impact of such inclement weather on buildings reduced substantially. Your contributions will help towards the costs of materials, as well as the cost of getting these men up to Tavea to do this work. Again, a massive vinaka vaka levu to you all. Please share with motivated friends and family. More updates later.
