One day the Huggins family are celebrating Ryders Playcentre graduation, preparing for his 5th birthday party and trying to contain his excitement to start school, the next they find out the heartbreaking news he has Leukaemia, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), life stands still and everything is put on hold.
Ryder and his family live an hour and a half away from Christchurch where he receives treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukeamia. They are grateful that Ryder and Mum, Amy can stay at Ronald McDonald House while this happens but it does mean their family is often split in two as Dad, Nathan and little sister, Tahlia need to stay home so Nathan can continue to work. During treatment Nathan and Tahlia also travel to Christchurch regularly to see Amy and Ryder, have some family time and make as many happy memories as possible during this rough time.
The battle ahead is going to last at least 2 years which will mean Amy will need to reduce her work hours if not leave her job (she is currently using her sick leave) to be able to care for Ryder during treatment and when Ryder is able to start school there will be days he isn’t well enough to go and will need to stay home.
Friend of the family
The money from this will be used to support the family with petrol costs, added expenses that treatment and being away from home brings and some day to day costs due to loss of income.
Thank you 20 August 2021
