Fundraising for my daughter's tertiary education in New York City

Canterbury

At just 19, Harley McVicar has spent over a decade working toward a singular goal. At eight, she launched a fashion blog, attended New Zealand Fashion Week, and interviewed designer Sean Kelly, sparking her dream of studying at Parsons School of Design in New York.

Raised by her mum, Kristen, in a home grounded in creativity and kindness, Harley was encouraged from infancy to create. Art was never a hobby, it was her path. Guided by values of resilience and generosity, she developed both her talent and determination.

Harley’s work ethic quickly set her apart. A multi-disciplinary artist, she explored painting, fashion, and design with relentless focus. Mentored by artist Callum Arnold, she built an exceptional portfolio, achieved top academic results, and won multiple awards.

Her dedication paid off when she was accepted into Parsons with a partial scholarship. However, the total cost; around $500,000 NZD which remains a major barrier. After COVID forced her mum’s business to close, funding this dream became uncertain.

Since her acceptance, Harley has worked tirelessly, saving over $30,000 while fundraising through art sales, exhibitions, and events. Despite strong community support, time is running out. She must begin in New York this August or lose her place.

Harley’s story is not about lack of talent or effort, but financial limitation. Still, she continues to work, create, and believe she will find a way, because this has been her path since she was eight.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
