Help Heal K9 Ruby's Pain

    Ruby's surgery went well.

The surgeon was impressed she was weight bearing the same day as the surgery!

She was booked in to get the knee she'd torn the ligament in sorted, but turns out over the christmas break she managed to tear the other one! So we got them both done at the same time.

She's had the MMP surgery which means she'll be back at it much sooner than other options. I've added a great (2 minute) video on what the surgery entails if anyone is curious!

She's definitely feeling sorry for herself but she's got a fentanyl patch (pain relief similar to morphine) attached to her leg so won't be feeling too much pain.

Looking forward to letting her out of the crate again properly (she does fit better than this photo shows, she's just decided to lie width wise instead of length wise 😂) and joining in the pack walks again.

Her schedule for the next six weeks will be pretty controlled, and then after 12 weeks she'll be ready to fully join again!

Weeks 1-2: 5-10 minute slow walks 6-8 times a day, constrained to crate or on a leash otherwise.

Weeks 3-4: Gradually increase the length and decrease the quantity of walks towards the weeks 5-6 goal

Weeks 5-6: She should be capable of doing a couple of 30 minute walks each day, she should have an x-ray here to determine how well she's healing.

Weeks 6+: Introduce off leash walking, 5 minutes for the first day off least and then gradually increase the amount of time.

    ...

Week 12: Should be back to unrestricted activity!

So hopefully we'll start joining in on the pack walks again (at least for part) from the 5 week mark!

  • Surgery Today!

      6 January 2021

Ruby was booked in for the surgery today, and has had it with a bit of a complication!

As mentioned it's common for dogs to tear the other ligament when the first one goes, but usually it's several months - 2 years later..

Ruby on the other hand managed to tear the other one between the X-rays and now.

So she's had the surgery done on both legs (which in the long run is a good thing as it means only one recovery time and a little cheaper as less x-rays/anesthetic.

The vet has been nice enough to let me pay off the remaining balance over three months so that's fine :)

She'll stay over night tonight, and possibly tomorrow depending on pain levels and then she'll be home!

I've been told she should be walking by the time she comes home, just can't jump yet so that will be exciting!

I'll be sure to add a video of her when she's home again!

    Thank you so much everyone!

  • Fantastic News!

      30 November 2020

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to the givealittle for Ruby 🙂

On top of the amount raised here we've also have a fantastic donation from For The Love Of Animals which means we're now able to book Ruby in to get things started! She's booked in for Xrays on the 7th of December.

I'll be sure to share progress updates here!

Again, thank you so much everyone!
