Heinrich has Leukemia. I am fundraising to pay the flight tickets for his children and grandchildren to visit him
Cockle Bay, Auckland
Heinrich is my husband and soulmate of 45 years. Together we have raised 3 children, lived in 2 countries and fought many a battle together.
With the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), his thoughts turned immediately to his family. A much-loved son, husband, father, and grandfather, he has a strong desire to see his children and grandchildren one more time.
I am fundraising to pay for the flight tickets for them to visit Heinrich in New Zealand.
The eldest, Wilhelm, lives in Poland with his wife and two children. We haven’t seen them since 2010. Covid put a stop to a planned visit, and the savings intended for that trip have been used to cover expenses and make up for the loss of income. We have not yet met their youngest, who is 10.
Our eldest daughter, Elizabeth, lives in South Africa with her partner and two children. We have not seen them since 2018.
In Auckland, Heinrich’s biggest support are our youngest child, Zara, his awesome friends and his colleagues.
The cost for 8 flight tickets at an average of $3000 comes to $24.000 and including travel insurance, it can easily reach the $30000 mark.
Heinrich works as a teacher aide. With little income and the realities of an increasing cost of living, bringing the two families to NZ for a visit is financially impossible.

Thanks again to all our supporters that made it possible for us to get our children and grandchildren over to New Zealand to visit Heinrich. Words cannot express our gratitude for your kindness, generosity, and messages of support. The funds donated by supporters were enough to cover the costs of all the flight tickets except for 1 ticket from South Africa.
We all spent quality time with Heinrich. We could celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary with our family. We had a $0-dollar Secret Santa. It was awesome to see how we all got creative and tried to find out what we can make for the other person without spending 1c. We decided this will become a yearly tradition.
Heinrich had chemo while the family was here, and they could see where we went and meet the staff. This was so important for them to see that he is well cared for and in good hands. He could show them his favourite spots and they could see where we live and that we have such an awesome support structure from friends and medical staff. We spent quality time at home when the weather was not great. The children’s whole focus was on him and his happiness.
We built new memories that we will keep in our hearts forever. This was such a special time. The chances of us all spending time together again with Heinrich are slim. This makes us even more grateful that we could make Heinrich’s dream come true. You made this possible and we will forever be grateful to you.
For Heinrich and I, life has returned to our new normal. Cycle 11 of his chemo treatment has been completed and we will continue to focus on the quality of life and enjoying the time we still have together. His last bone marrow biopsy showed that he is still in remission. Although Heinrich’s Leukemia diagnosis came as such a shock, we are also aware of all the blessings we have every day.
Thank you all very, very much!
