  • Joel’s Hospital update: Out with the old, in with the new 🔩

Just over a week ago, Joel underwent major corrective surgery at Waikato Hospital to address the complications from his initial operation in Indonesia. Surgeons removed the original hardware that had failed to hold his femur properly in place and new plates, bolts, and screws were inserted through a 45cm incision. Because his leg had set incorrectly, they also had to make a 2nd incision further down the femur and perform another controlled break to realign his leg for proper healing. The operation took 6hrs and due to the extent of the cuts and trauma, Joel lost a large amount of blood. He received 6 units of blood products during surgery, followed by an additional 2 units a few days later when his haemoglobin levels dropped further. It takes his body 3-4mths to replenish what was lost, a reminder of how serious this has been. We’re incredibly thankful for blood donors whose generosity helped save Joel’s life. The past week has been incredibly tough. There have been many hard days, both physically and emotionally for Joel. He continues to battle intense pain and exhaustion - and morphine is essential for getting through each day. But there’s also progress, with the help of his Occupational Therapist, Joel has taken the first brave steps - and is now able to get himself out of bed and use a walker for short periods. He’ll soon be discharged and whilst his journey ahead remains long, he will continue the slow but steady process of healing at home with his positive determination

We’re so relieved Joel is finally back in the NZ health system. Last Friday he saw an orthopaedic specialist and the fracture clinic at Waikato Hospital.

    Unfortunately, the news wasn’t great.

His scaphoid fracture is worse than expected and now needs a full plaster cast for 8 weeks, much longer than the 3 weeks in a half splint he had overseas.

More worrying is the outcome of his major surgery. Joel’s been told he’s suffered a life-changing injury. The surgery overseas didn’t work, the bolt meant to secure his femur to his pelvis has moved and isn’t holding anything anymore. Because of that, his bone never started healing.

Today, he’s back in theatre. Surgeons are trying a new method using metal plates to realign and stabilise the femur, this time with a top NZ specialist.

It sucks watching him go through this again. It’s been a tough and exhausting journey, but we’re hopeful this time things will go right.

We’ll update you once he’s out. If you’re nearby, a visit or message would mean the world to him.

Thanks so much for sticking with Joel through all of this.

  • Update on Joel

Apologies for the delay - I (Briar) escaped to Aus for a few days! Mum and Dad finally flew back with Joel late last week - but not without a bit of drama. The hospital wouldn’t release him until the outstanding balance was settled with an ambulance waiting outside to rush him to the airport. After over an hour of negotiating to pay a portion of the invoice, they were finally allowed to leave with his meds. Joel then nearly fainted at the airport after taking his meds on an empty stomach. Over 35 hours, 6 business class flights (so he could lie down), 3 economy flights, 4 airports, and countless wheelchair rides later… they finally made it home to NZ. They were very exhausted! Since being home, Mum’s managed to get his pain under control so Joel’s much more comfortable now, though still has very limited movement and needs help with everything. True to form, Joel’s determined to walk again ASAP. He’s hoping to start rehab after his appnt with an orthopaedic specialist on Friday, and once scans confirm the surgery in Lombok meets NZ standards. We’re still waiting to hear if his travel insurers will accept any claims and if ACC will support any of his recovery, now that he’s back. Please feel free to reach out to Joel - he’d really appreciate a message or call. He’s getting pretty bored lying around and still has weeks ahead of him before he’s back on his feet (with his new bionic bits🚶‍♂️🔩)

Thanks so much to everyone who’s supported us so far. We truly appreciate you 🥰
