Help Keep Spencer Swimming for His Heart Health

Spencer is 11 and in Year 6. He was born with a rare and complex heart condition. His heart sits on the right side of his chest, is mirror-imaged, and the right side never developed properly, so it has been replumbed to work with just one pumping chamber.

He has had three major heart surgeries, starting at just 4 days old, plus a catheter procedure.

Recent tests show Spencer is in the early stages of heart failure. He’s on new medication to ease the load on his heart, needs closer monitoring, tires easily and has cut back his school hours. On quieter days, you’ll find him building Lego.

His medical team wants him swimming every day, for exercise rather than lessons. It’s a simple, effective way for him to stay active and burn energy without putting too much strain on his heart, and he loves it.

We live rurally, and the nearest pool is 50km away. A heated swim spa at home would keep the water at a comfortable temperature, making daily swimming achievable all year round, without the long drive or the risk of picking up germs and bugs.

We’re also trialling osteopathy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. As his condition is classed as medical rather than a disability, we don’t qualify for funding for these.
