Kevin Hu, a math teacher at Takapuna Grammar School, has tragically passed away at 36 in a snorkeling accident in Fiji last Friday(14 Nov).
Torbay, Auckland
Kevin Hu came to New Zealand in 2018. After completing his master’s degree, he worked incredibly hard and eventually became a mathematics teacher—a career he was deeply passionate about. Kevin dedicated himself to building a better life for his family, and everything seemed to be moving in a positive direction. Tragically, this was cut short last week when he lost his life in a snorkeling accident in Fiji.
The family is currently looking into any travel insurance policy that Kevin may have had.
His family was devastated by the news. With the support of friends, classmates, and colleagues, Kevin’s elderly parents have already travelled to New Zealand. They are planning to fly to Fiji on Sunday (23 November) to bring their son home and take care of his final affairs.
The family is facing severe financial hardship. Kevin’s parents both rely on physically demanding labour jobs to make a living, and the unexpected costs involved in handling their son’s passing are overwhelming. They are now humbly seeking support from the community during this unimaginable time.
Kevin was adored by his students and colleagues and made a profound impact on the school. His passion for teaching—and his gift for making maths accessible and enjoyable—meant students loved being in his classroom. Kevin’s dedication, enthusiasm, and gentle spirit will be remembered always by those fortunate enough to know him.
We love you Kevin.
