Help Kōtuku represent Aotearoa/NZ at the Waka Ama World Championships in Hawai'i August 2024

  • After Hawaii - Summer Challenges

      30 October 2024

After coming 6th in the World on their V6 J16s 500m event, and having a a well-deserved break, Kotuku and crew are now preparing for new Summer Challenges. For Kootuku this means the Waka Eiva Festival in Rarotonga in November. Then in January, the Aotearoa/NZ National Sprint Championships.

Thanks to everyone who supported her Hawaii campaign. Kootuku had an amazing experience and her waka paddling skills developed hugely. She is now back paddling with Te Aratika ki Maniapoto, looking forward to the new challenges ahead.

Kootuku joined with her Maniapoto summer waka whaanau for a regatta at Auckland in May. The day was run by Te Ara Tika Water Sports and held at "The Ramp", Otahuhu on the Tamaki River. The weather was perfect for paddling, a beautiful sunny Autumn day in the City of Sails. Kootuku's team rose to the occasion to win the Open Mixed W6 5km, and come overall. Kootuku joined with coach, Edz Wehi, Mia Wehi, Tyler-Shea Ruki, Darius Mulligan-Green and Bubba Rata.

Here's a pic of Kootuku on the day post-regatta after a yummy kai stop at Pho Vietnamese Restaurant, Manurewa.

Kotuku and crew are well into their worlds training with 7 x trainings/week, 6 days/week. Kotuku was fighting off a cold last week, so rested for a few days, but will be back into it this week.

We have a private cinema viewing of Ka Whawhai Tonu Struggle Without End, the film about the battle of Oraakau. Set for 23 June 2024, 1.30pm at Te Awamutu Regent Theatre. As a fundraiser for the campaign. Will post details of how to pre-purchase tickets when they come to hand.

In the meantime, please remember to share Kotuku's Givealittle page to your networks. https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-kotuku-represent-aotearoanz-at-the-waka-ama. Thankyou.

      28 March 2024

    Kia ora.

Thank you so much for your generous koha to Kotuku's campaign.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini kee. My strength is not the strength of one, but of many.

Kotuku's team is having a well deserved rest after Secondary Nationals and a busy sprint season. Back into training after Easter.

She is looking forward to the Easter break when we will be spending time with our Tairawhiti whanau at our beloved kaenga on her grandfather's side, Pariwhero at Te Araroa.

    He wiwi Nati, no Porourangi

    He wiwi moke, no Waiapu

    No Whangaokena, no Hikurangi

He wiwi, he Nati, he whanoke.

E haere ana ki te pakanga

Ka peka mai nei ki te marae

Kia mihi, kia tangi , hei konei ra

    He wiwi, hei konei ra.

Have a blessed Easter weekend e te iwi.

    Mauri ora!
