Help Liz fight cancer

  • I never thought I would be writing this update

When Liz first found out she had cancer it wasn’t just cancer, it was breast cancer. And, it wasn’t just breast cancer, it was triple negative breast cancer. It was aggressive. It had already metastasized into her lymph nodes and the main tumour was very large.

Given all that I was quite honestly surprised that the possibility of a CPR (Complete Pathological Response) was even a possibility but the doctor placed the odds at nearly 50% with an extra 14% obtainable with the additional unfunded immunotherapy treatment.

I got in touch with my uncle to benefit from his oncology expertise. He told me that ‘immunotherapy doesn’t always work, but when it does it can be miraculous’.

Well today’s update is that in Liz’s case it has been miraculous.

During Liz’s recent surgery the surgeon was unable to find any remaining evidence of the tumour. They removed a number of lymph nodes and biopsied them. No live cancer cells were found. She has quite literally been told she is cured.

Of course I caution you to note that the immunotherapy drug funded through this page was one of 5 chemotherapy drugs Liz was treated with so we can only speculate about the exact role the immunotherapy played but the outcome is …. no cancer was found. Her doctors feel the combination was what worked.

In the interests of prudence her oncologist still advises that once she recovers from surgery she under-go a course of radiotherapy. The recovery from the surgery is proving to be hard-going, and it’s somewhat hard for Liz to celebrate this outcome while feeling pretty cruddy but it really is the outcome we dreamed of for her.

Liz is tremendously grateful to everyone who made it possible. The end of Liz’s cancer journey is in sight and she can look forward to watching her kids grow up.

    Thank you!

  • Some good news!

This latest update is a joy to write because … the tumour has shrunk! The latest MRI showed a massive reduction in the size of the tumour!

This obviously makes the prognosis much more hopeful and dictates the next steps in the treatment plan. On 8 March Liz will have an operation to remove the remains of the tumour, a good margin of surrounding tissue and the lymph nodes on that same side.. This operation will also allow the doctors to do some diagnostics as to whether cancerous cells remain outside of the tumour.

If the surrounding cells are not cancerous it’s not quite the end of the road. In addition to recovery from the surgery there will be radiotherapy.

If cancer remains in the surrounding tissue then the radio therapy will be augmented by more aggressive surgery ( a full mastectomy) and additional chemotherapy.

Either way the possibility of eliminating the cancer is still very much on the table now!

Obviously we will never know what role the immunotherapy we helped to fund played in the chemotherapy results - but we know that we helped to make sure Liz had the best chance she could have and Liz is tremendously grateful for that.

I’m going to keep this page running even though the immunotherapy has ended. Liz still had another 3-4 months of treatment. She is working to pay down the last of the immunotherapy costs and still dealing with the loss of income and ongoing health related costs.

Another bit of light - Liz’s hair is growing back….

That is great news Liz. I am so happy for you. Fingers crossed the operation goes well and you have a really positive result from it. Keep fighting. You got this!!

  • The tough get going

These last couple of weeks have been pretty tough for Liz. The side effects from the Docetaxel & Carboplatin have been nastier than previous rounds of chemo and have seen her spending much of the last couple of weeks in hospital or at the doctors.

Liz and I had been hoping that the previous pattern of her having a couple of bad weeks and a good week would persist - allowing her to come up to my 50th birthday party tomorrow. But sadly that is not how it has played out. This is a huge disappointment to both of us as we had been looking forward to it even before Liz found out she had cancer.

The bright spot in all this is that Liz only has one more of these chemo treatments to go. She is also having the last immunotherapy treatment this week (this is the one we have been raising money for). There are also some promising signs that this chemo drug has been more effective than the first one.

The next step in the process is surgery - which is likely to be in around 6 weeks. It’s going to be a long haul.

All this treatment is a lot. It’s tough physically and emotionally - but it’s also great to know that everything that can be done is being done to get Liz through this. In particular we were able to raise a significant amount of the money for the immunotherapy. I am, however, going to extend the date for this page out now past Liz’s surgery . Even once the immunotherapy bill is paid, there are ongoing costs around all these hospital visits and treatments that are hard for Liz to cover without being able to work.

Liz and her family wish to convey their immense gratitude for all the support they have received. She says all the lovely messages have kept her going.

  • The platinum doublet starts

      19 December 2022

Liz started on Docetaxel & Carboplatin for this week’s chemo treatment (yes that means FEC is done & dusted). I have to admit when I first heard this combo is known as the ‘Platinum double’ I assumed that was a bit like calling it ‘The gold standard’ - but it turns out the drugs actually have platinum in them!

Liz also had her second immunotherapy treatment on the preceding day. And yes, the cost of this second treatment was covered by our efforts! Thank you once again for your donation & for sharing this page.

After this week there are 2 more Atslizamub (immunotherapy) treatments and 2 more Docetaxel & Carboplatin. The last treatment will be in early February.. Unfortunately that isn’t the end of the road for treatments. Details of surgery and radiotherapy are firming up but they are on the cards.

The exciting news is that some of Liz’s friends ran a raffle to help out - with some great donated prizes. They raised $3950! Thanks to all of those who helped out with this, to those who bought tickets & a special thanks to organizers Tania Putu, Shelly Whitburn and Siekina. Gratitude also to those businesses that donated prizes…. Tremaine energy Centre & Caltex on Tremaine, 3D Glass art (Serena Mercer), Lido Aquatic Centre, Manawatu gymsports, Heritage ink tattoos, O'Brien family, Trevor Wagener, Revolve styling, Makeup by Hayz, Effleurage massage, Hair works, Red star dance, Focal.point cinema, Amayjen restaurant

I’m ending this with some Christmas wishes - I hope that all of Liz’s supporters have a great Christmas and maybe take a moment to appreciate themselves for being there & helping Liz at this time. Also, wishing Liz and her family a special Christmas with illness, but also with an extra appreciation of each other.

I’m leaving you with a picture of a little Christmas Angel- aka Liz’s granddaughter

  • Immunotherapy is happening

      22 November 2022
    Main image

As I write this Liz is heading off for her last FEC (fluorouracil, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide) chemo treatment. Unfortunately that isn’t the end of chemo - just the end of that drug combo. Yesterday she had her first immunotherapy treatment - funded by us!

However, with the last two treatments still not funded I’m extending the closing date for the page out until the end of January (her last treatment is late Jan).

As always Liz is grateful for the support she has received, including the cooked meals! Touchingly her daughter, Sesi, has managed to raise $100 by refereeing hockey. (I’m a big fan of Sesi & this is just one more reason why).

It’s fair to say Liz has been feeling a bit shabby. Traditional cancer drugs are basically poisons & the goal is to poison the cancer more than you poison the rest of your body. Immunotherapy is the emerging area of cancer treatment which offers the hope of getting your immune system to turn on the cancer (sadly it still has it’s own side effects).

I'm sharing a pic of Liz and her family from more carefree times - our thoughts are with all of them as they negotiate this unwelcome chapter in their lives'

  • Not the hair!!

      26 October 2022
    Main image

The latest update on Liz’s treatment is that her beautiful hair has started to fall out. Liz had prepared for this by getting a hair-dresser to cut off her long locks but it’s still a bit of a confronting thing to have to deal with.

She has also had some problems with her white blood cell count falling low and spent a few nights in hospital last week because of that. Her next treatment is due on Tuesday 1 Nov but if her white blood cell count is not high enough on Monday the treatment will unfortunately be delayed until it is.

However, after a tough weekend, Liz has been improving & is hoping that is an indication here white blood cell count is climbing so she can proceed with the second treatment as planned next week.

All of this has meant that her husband, Kina, has had more unpaid leave - which makes her more grateful than ever for the support you have shown by donating and by sharing her updates.

  • Liz's chemo has started

      19 October 2022
    Main image

Just an update on Liz’s progress.

Liz had her first chemo last week with a combination of Fluorouracil (which targets fast-dividing cells), Epirubicin (which slows down cancer divisions) and Cyclophosphamide (which interferes with the growth of cancer cells, allowing the body to metabolise them. This was followed up with a bone marrow injection to encourage her body to produce white blood cells. On the first of November she will have ‘the same again’.

Overall Liz is doing OK post treatment. She has various symptoms like Nausea, pains, fatigue etc but is coping and is mentally in a good space. Her friends have rallied around with cooked meals, flowers, treats and, of course, the huge contribution you have all made to helping raise the money for the additional treatment.

I am extending out the end date of this givealittle to 21 November - which is the date when Liz has to start handing over money. Please continue to share this page through your networks (and say a big thank you to those of your friends who have already contributed). All the support means the world to Liz.

So glad treatment has started. I hope it’s not too horrible for you. Stay strong love

  • Thank you Thank you thank you

      2 October 2022

I want to send out a huge thank you to all those who have donated so far - it has been an amazing response and Liz has been quite overwhelmed (emotional in a good way).

We have nearly raised $10,000!!! What incredible people you all are. We have almost funded the first two treatments!

Liz is currently well and spending time with family.

She is starting her first Chemo on Tuesday 11 Oct. Two rounds of FEC (fluorouracil, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide) three weeks apart. Then three weeks later she will have the third treatment - and that will be when they add in the Atezolizumab - which is the drug we are raising funds for. The last 3 rounds will be Docetaxel & Carboplatin, along with the Atezolizumab we are raising money for.

Obviously we expect the chemo to make Liz feel sick but she is looking forward to getting started so she can get it over with.

Please keep sharing this givealittle page - it has been amazing to see how many people have donated, both people who know Liz directly and people who know her friends and family, and even a few who are just kind strangers. We are grateful for all your kind messages too.

  • Fundraiser (with corrected address)

      29 September 2022
    Main image

Sorry for the duplicate message - but the address was wrong on the image on the original post & while evil Eileen was tempted to let it stay & send people to the wrong address it does rather defeat the purpose of it - so here is the revised poster.

    ORIGINAL UPDATE

The response so far has been amazing - Liz has been totally overwhelmed.

This is just a short update to let those of you based in Palmy know that the wonderful Anna Krsinich is running a fund-raiser on Friday - tomorrow night. Go along, paint some ceramics, have some fun AND support Liz at the same time.

    Please tell your friends
