I have recently been to Sydney to try to seek alternative treatment. Up until that date we were led to believe that I had a moderate curve. After meeting with the specialist at the Scolicare Clinic, I discovered my spine wasn't moderate and my curve was actually severe. It was very upsetting to mum and I as we are still in much disbelief of how quickly everything has happened. I got told my curve was 68degrees. Unfortunately due to the significance of the curve, I was advised that surgery is my only option and that bracing will be of no help. Heading back to New Zealand we went and spoke to the GP. The GP managed to get us a private specialist appointment in Dunedin the following month. After that we travelled to Dunedin to meet the scoliosis surgeon. The surgeon evaluated my back/spine and measured me at a 70degree upper curve and a 40degree lower curve. He said I have progressive scoliosis and my spine wont stop changing until it is halted, meaning my only option is to have surgery. We are still in shock after all that has happened. We are continuing with physio and chiropractor treatment to keep my spine stay mobile and to help with my posture as well as alleviating my pain. I have been told I will have surgery this year. I am feeling very nervous and scared about what is ahead but I'm trying to keep positive about what my career will have installed for me afterward. Luckily for now I am still able to continue with my swimming and tap dancing.
My journey has really only just begun and I know there is a long way to go. We are very thankful for everyone's support. Although bracing is not an option, all funds raised are being used for my ongoing physio and chiro treatments and any other private consultations I may need.
