Help me get to the Harvard and Yale Model United Nations!

Hi everyone and Kia Ora! My name is Mia Perkins and unbelievably I have been selected to be a part of the Australasian team to compete overseas in the Model United Nations at Yale & Harvard. This is one of the world’s most prestigious and demanding events for young people and takes place in January 2020 in the USA.

The Model United Nations simulates decision making at the UN General Assembly. Over 4 days of intensive competition, delegates represent different countries and work to draft resolutions, form committees and debate real-life international issues to try and pass a resolution that would have meaningful value if implemented for real. This trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to connect with young people from across the whole world and challenge me to grow, further my communication and presentation skills and develop my personal confidence. Model UN is not just a passion for me, but a big step towards working in the UN, an aspirational and lifetime career goal. Opening myself to view new cultures and learning from those of a different background to me would be so amazing, provide memories to last a lifetime and give a starting point for positive change back here in NZ.

Through this trip, I aim to bring the knowledge gained to think critically about what we can do here in New Zealand to improve our nation through having an increased knowledge of foreign affairs, international relations and global policy through this trip. Human communication and co-operation form the basis for relationships across the world, and it’s important that these are healthy, strong and balanced. Hopefully, I hope to inspire others that no dream is too big, no passion too small and that the world is open to those willing to explore it!

From living in a small town, this gives me an opportunity that would never be open to me. However- I need your help to do this!
