We are fundraising for the costs of recommended breast cancer treatment (Perjeta) that could be life changing!
Christchurch, Canterbury
My beautiful sister Melissa was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer just before Christmas 2022. At just 39 she has drawn a really short straw to get this in the first place and it's a fast growing and aggressive cancer. She has a long road ahead of her with chemo and a mastectomy required to give her the best chance of fighting this so she can be around to watch her two young girls grow up. They are only 7 and 8 and have already nearly lost their mum after her first round of chemo.
She has just got through 3 rounds of strong chemo and is moving onto the next stage of her treatment. Fortunately one component of her recommended treatment (Herceptin) is now funded as it is life changing for those with the type of cancer Melissa has - before it the survival rates were not good. However, her oncologist also recommends that she recieives treatment with Perjeta (Pertuzamab) as studies show it will materially increase her chances of survival if she receives 4 rounds prior to surgery.
Unfortunately Perjeta is not funded for stage 3 breast cancer, only stage 4 despite it being recommended by her oncologist! This is where we need help as she starts treatment on 20 April 2023 and it's not cheap, with the cost of the 4 rounds required before her surgery being $26,000. Ideally she should be taking it for a year, at a cost of $90,000. We would greatly appreciate any help towards the costs of her treatment so she hopefully doesn't get to stage 4!
