Help Motueka Elite Adventure Racer, Shannon Trimble, Realise her Dream

I started Adventure Racing in 2016. Rather than ease myself in gently to the adventure racing world, I threw myself in the deep end and went straight for GODZone.

For those who are not familiar with this event, it is one of the most mentally challenging, physically demanding and emotionally inspiring adventure races in the world. I took the plunge when the event was staged in my home town of Motueka and spent 7 days in the wilderness areas of Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi National Parks. And many places in between.

By bike, in a sea kayak, trekking, mountain biking, river canoeing, rafting, and coastaneering, I was part of a team which finished the grueling full course.

“I’ve found my thing!” was my conclusion after washing away the blood, sweat and tears. And now I'm up for more.

The team has been accepted into the NORCHA event in Portugal this September. One of only 12 teams in the world to qualify for this elite event, I am excited and nervous about the opportunity, both on a personal level and for our beautiful town.

But I ask you to take a step back and consider the realities of being an adventure racer. Not only do we competitors have to hold down full time jobs, relationships and sanity – we also have to devote considerable time to training. A 1 hour jog along the waterfront doesn’t cut it. Try an overnight bike ride to Nelson Lakes, a trek up some random high peak in the dark, then return home late the following day for a shower and feed before work.

Adventure racing at this level requires dedication, commitment and a sense of transcending personal boundaries.

To make this opportunity become a reality I am asking the local community to rally around with financial contributions to cover my air fares, living expenses while away, insurance, race food and race gear.
