Mya has a severely compressed spinal cord. The corrective surgery has worsened her situation and requires intense treatment in Australia.
Canterbury
Mya Cherry is a sixteen year old girl, whom I have know since she was very young. Mya had always struggled with Muscle movement, co-ordination and strength. What we didn't know was Mya was born with a severe compressed spinal cord (paper thin) at her C1 & C2 which when discovered only this year required urgent surgery. She was at high risk of becoming a tetraplegic if she had a fall. Mya has struggled all her life due to this condition unknowingly (what a trooper !).
Mya subsequently underwent 6.5hrs of surgery back in July, but unfortunately something went wrong, and she woke with very limited movement & strength. She basically had to learn to walk again.
Mya spent seven days at St Georges then was transferred to Burwood Spinal Unit where she was an impatient for only three weeks, and was receiving 4-5 session of physio and OT a day but once she started walking with crutches she was discharged and only receives one physio appointment per week, which is clearly not enough to get her quality of life back. Mya struggles everyday with daily activities.
The Opportunity is for Mya is to do what Many Kiwi’s have to do to get better treatment and that is to travel to Australia for intense rehab in an attempt regain movement and strength. Go to https://www.makingstrides.com.au/ to view the treatment venue and options etc.
Mya is such a special young lady with a positive attitude and a personality most parents dream of their children having, she just needs a leg up so she can enjoy the rest of her teenage years and beyond to the rest of her life. We believe Mya deserves every opportunity she can get, but we need your help as to get to Australia and obtain the treatment as it is a big cost. I do hope you can help in some little way by giving just a little.
I am a close Family friend who has watch Mya tackle adversity with her condition all her life. It was only discovered this year what the cause was, unfortunately a corrective surgery has made things much worse for Mya and her quality of Life.
Primarily Treatment costs, then Travel, accommodation if there anything available.
