Avian Rescue otago
Otago
With the current pindone drops occurring around wanaka, the local raptors are at a high risk of secondary poisoning due to ingestion of contaminated carcasses. The species affected are owls (less commonly) hawks and falcons. In the past there have been instances of kaka ingesting baited items if food leading to them requiring emergency treatment.
Birds with secondary poisoning will be wobbly, unable to fly, often standing with their head down and their wings drooping, as time progresses they will begin to suffer seizures followed by death, this horrible process can take up to 3 days to start after ingesting affected carcasses.
Money from this give a little goes towards helping these raptors.
