Help Mum Smile Again After Surviving a Traumatic Brain Injury

Our mum has always been a kind, caring person who puts others before herself.

In February 2005, she stayed the night with her cousin. Mum had no reason to believe she was in danger, as the man responsible was usually calm and had never shown signs of violence.

During the night, she woke to him attacking her cousin. Without thinking twice, Mum tried to intervene and was seriously injured. Her cousin sadly lost her life, while Mum suffered life-threatening injuries.

She sustained a severe traumatic brain injury that required emergency surgery. She also lost several teeth and continues to live with the physical and psychological effects of that night.

Before this happened, Mum had a beautiful smile. But after the injury, she's become self-conscious about it. It has also made eating uncomfortable and serves as a constant reminder of what she went through. Although her dental injuries were a direct result of what she endured, ACC has not covered the treatment she needs.

She's a strong woman and has recovered well but she still lives with some psychological effects and there are times when she needs my support.

We're raising funds to help give Mum back some of the confidence she lost.

She has given us full permission to share her story and create this fundraiser.

We're currently consulting with dentists to find the most appropriate treatment. We'll keep everyone updated and share the treatment plan and quote once we have them.
