We need your help to collect and preserve the archives and personal papers of LGBTIQ people and organisations in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Nationwide

LAGANZ is an archive for personal papers of LGBTTFIQ people and the records of LGBTTFIQ organizations. We also collect related documents of historical and cultural value. LGBTTFIQ includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, takatāpui, fa'afafine, intersex or queer and includes any same-sex attracted, transgender or intersex members of any indigenous community of the Pacific. We believe that the histories and whakapapa of our communities are vital knowledge needed to foster the sense of belonging that combats stigma and social isolation.

LAGANZ is a registered charity. We rely on external funding and volunteer hours to ensure our collections grow and remain accessible. We need to cover the cost of renting storage space to hold new items/taonga before they are accessioned, sorted and catalogued prior to entering the permanent archive. The archive is housed and available to researchers at the Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington.

Most of what organisations produce today — including meeting minutes and documents, social media posts and e-newsletters — is digital. So we also need to cover ongoing secure digital storage costs. Some older digital media, like CD-ROMs and DVDs, are fragile and LAGANZ must be able to extract files contained on them and save the data in secure digital locations. This digital and physical storage space provides the level of safety and security required for our precious items.
