No book has been written on the NZDC Inc. and its history. I aim to get this done.
Nationwide
My rallying cry to you is: this will be a book for all New Zealanders. Particularly those interested in our outdoors and wilderness regions. The history of hunting in New Zealand, and our backcountry huts, many were established in the 1950s-60s as bases for the government shooters. The deer culling industry has left a legacy that can be enjoyed by hunters and trampers in our great outdoors.
In 2023, my first book Finding Frank: The Life of Frank Erceg – New Zealand Deer Hunter, Mountaineer, Photographer was published to critical acclaim, with the first print run of 2000 copies quickly selling out initiating a reprint. For that book I undertook extensive research into the history of deer in New Zealand. This included research on the New Zealand government deer cullers.
The NZDC Inc. was founded in 1966. The society represents a significant period in the history of deer hunting in New Zealand – the era of the iconic government deer culler 1930-1987 when the Department of Conservation took over deer management.
Of the few surviving earlier deer cullers, there are precious archives that warrant preserving and proper housing. My aim is to travel throughout New Zealand, undertake interviews and assess these collections. These treasured artefacts and materials will be permanently re-housed to the NZ Deer Stalkers Heritage Museum in Wellington. To be available to the public, and for other writers and historians to view.
I graciously ask you to support me in getting this book completed.
Funds raised will be used for travel and accommodation throughout New Zealand. For professional manuscript development, including transcription services, editing, and getting the book publisher ready. For promoting the book once published.
2026 here we go! 21 January 2026
Dear donators and supporters,
Happy New Year to you all.
I’ve started the new year with a trip to Napier where I interviewed deer culler, Bill Nikl. Bill’s photos from his days hunting are a great record of those times 1960-1970s. He enjoyed his photography, this is clear from the many well thought out compositions and the quality of his images. I had a great weekend looking through photos and interviewing him. He spent a winter on goat control on Raoul Island, I found that interesting. Bill is also a skilled craftsman, with his beautifully crafted handmade knives.
The book is moving along, and it is my intention to ease of the travelling a bit this year, and concentrate on the writing, I'm hoping to get the books first draft completed by the end of the year.
Donations are still coming in, and the plan is to keep the campaign running. The givealittle foundation are more than happy to have it continue and have encouraged me to do so, as its been such a positive experience with so much feedback and public attention. And this can only be good also, for when the book is released. So, please share the link with others: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-preserve-the-history-of-the-nz-deercullers
As usual I am very grateful for all the well wishes and donations recieved, and will continue to keep you updated on the campaign and the book’s progress.
Best wishes
Louise
