Help Puerto Rican Families Displaced by the 2020 Earthquakes

$645 donated

Puerto Rico has been hit with multiple devastating Earthquakes. Please donate to help them recover.

Canterbury

My name is Conor Grice, a Kiwi in Puerto Rico volunteering in a program (El Pueblo Unido) designed to improve the public education of the island. El Pueblo Unido is partnered with three schools on the island. In the past month the south coast of Puerto Rico has faced non stop earthquakes, the highest registering a 6.4 magnitude. Sadly one of our partner schools, Asuncion Rodriguez de Sala, is in the heavily damaged city of Guayanilla and five of its families are homeless. They need our help! On the 23rd of January, El Pueblo Unido began the first of many relief trips to help these families get back on their feet providing basic food, clothing and cleaning materials. To help support these families please donate! In the coming weeks, every donation we receive will go straight to the families of Ponce and Guayanilla and with your donations we can help these families find new housing and buy supplies to get their lives back. ¡Ayuda Puerto Rico Ahora!

Seeing the earthquake damage first hand evoked the same feelings I had after the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake when my grandparents’ home was damaged. Puerto Rico does not have the capacity or resources and its people need help.

Since the first earthquake in December, Puerto Rico have been in a freak "Quake Swarm," which has routinely pushed back the scheduled first steps towards normalcy. People in Christchurch know what that is like. Hundreds of people, mostly families, homeless are living in emergency housing. Most Puerto Rican Schools and infrastructure are not up to current earthquake codes. Guayanilla lost its only library and it is unlikely to ever open its doors again without help. They lost their main Church. Homes are destroyed. Schools are closed and most are not sure when they will recover. Kiwis, Puerto Rico needs your help! We know how tough it is to rebuild after an earthquake. Please Donate today!

I am a team member of El Pueblo Unido and have set this up to fund our program supporting the families that have been displaced by the 2020 Puerto Rican Quakes.

Use of funds

All donations will be used to support the 5 homeless ARS families recover and also for materials to teach classes for displaced students. For example, sewing kits and fabric for a clothes making course, or woodworking tools/material for a woodshop class.

Thank you so much early, donaters!  12 February 2020

Thank you so much! You who have so generously given in the early days of this fundraiser are the foundation of Guayanilla's youth's lives returning to normalcy. As reported by Jennice Fuentes, "Puerto Rico Secretary of Education Eligio Hernández Pérez has announced that his agency expects to open 75% of the Island’s 856 school buildings this semester, many of them by March. This would leave 25% of schools closed until the next school year, or possibly longer" (Fuentes 2020). With your continued support we can help those affected by the extended school closures!
