We are seeking donations to help restore St Augustine's Church to its former glory and protect it for the future.
Lower Hutt, Wellington
St Augustine’s Anglican Church in Petone is currently being repainted to protect and preserve this much-loved historic building for the future.
During this work, two significant areas of rotten timber have been uncovered that were completely hidden beneath the old paintwork.
One of these areas is particularly serious. In a box corner at the front of the church, rot has been found running the full length of a 7-metre structural beam. This has required us to urgently engage local building company EBUILD to assess and carry out the necessary repairs.
Because this damage was only discovered once the painting was underway, it is not covered by the fundraising already completed for the project, including generous support from the Lotteries Environment and Heritage Committee, Hutt City Council, and members of the St Augustine’s congregation.
We now need to raise an additional $25,000 to complete these essential repairs properly and ensure the church building remains safe and protected for years to come.
St Augustine’s is more than a church building. It is a familiar part of Petone’s streetscape and has been in continuous use since first opening in 1903.
We are asking for your help to repair this hidden damage and preserve an important piece of Petone’s heritage, designed by Frederick de Jersey Clare.
If 250 people give $100, we can fully fund these repairs. Every contribution, large or small, will make a real difference.
St Augustine’s Anglican Church meets in a Category 2 heritage building in Britannia Street, Petone. We have a broad range of ministries, including a Sunday family dinner, providing breakfasts to the local school and small group bible studies.
We will use the funds to replace two significant areas of rotten timber that have been uncovered during our repainting project.
