Help Save Leaning Lodge – Treasured Historic Otago Hut

  • Looking for $15,000

      12 August 2022

If we can raise an additional $15,000 from public donations in the next 2 months, we can commence the project in Spring of this year !

How great would that be, we are just so stoked to be this close !

  • Help Save Leaning Lodge – Good Progress

      4 July 2022

Funding is nearly 40% of our $240,000 goal with Give a Little donations and grants. Fantastic. We are grateful for this interest and generosity.

Leaning Lodge needs replacement at a time when this highly accessible hut brims with potential for positive use.

Sitting high on Pātearoa, the Rock and Pillar Range, amid hulking schist tors and wind-swept alpine flora, the hut is one hour’s drive from Dunedin plus a 2-3 hour walk. It has been immensely popular with trampers, four-wheel drivers, mountain bikers, cycle tourers, cross country skiers and ski tourers. Demand for sustainable domestic recreation is at an all-time high. Outdoor educators, scientists and citizens increasingly seek such bases for exploring the environment.

See our Facebook page (link below), our new website is under development thanks to the University of Otago Marketing Department student group, a link will follow soon...

Please, help us achieve our goal.

    About us:

The Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club (OTMC) established the Leaning Lodge Trust to build a code compliant hut. OTMC will celebrate its centenary in 2023. Our ambition is opening a new hut then.

  • University of Otago Marketing Department assistance

      5 April 2022

We are very pleased that the University Marketing Department has provided a dedicated student group to assist us in fund raising, particularly addressing our Give A Little campaign, the results of which will soon be reflected here !

Thanks to our generous donors for funds to-date, we look forward to more help in funding our new hut to provide a public place of welcome for future users.

  • Work party for site verification and the placing of the anchor piles

      9 January 2022

This coming weekend sees the start of the building project with the profiling of the site and the placing of the anchor piles, a small but preliminary step on the build journey.

Fundraising has taken a bit of a break but is about to receive some serious attention and we are hoping to have the Otago University Marketing department contributing expertise and time to the project starting first semester of 2022.
