Northland

The Herald Building in Kohukohu was purpose-built as a newpaper printing office between 1901 and 1905 and housed three different newspapers until 1959, including the Hokianga Times and Hokianga Herald. For a decade from 1982 it was used as a Community Resource Centre and for various activities during the 2000s including furniture and boat building, then later as a local arts, crafts and produce shop. With ownership recently returned to Kohukohu Community Trust - a Registered Charity - the Hokianga Herald Group: Te Roopu Herara Hokianga has formed to 1) Establish 'The Hokianga Herald Building' Community Resource & Information Centre, to serve the greater North Hokianga area, and 2) Renovate the Herald Building, in association with HeritageNZ, and in partnership with Lotteries Environment & Heritage, appropriate to its place as a life-long 'centre of communication' within the town, now Kohukohu Heritage Precinct, and the wider district. The Community Resource & Information Centre will house a multitude of activities including offices of the Kohukohu TimeBank, a North Hokianga-wide Newsletter, 'Kai Ora' Healthy Food and Community Gardens coordination and fresh produce distribution, Eco-centre, a venue for meetings, wananga, workshops, hui and classes of all kinds including Holiday Programs for children/tamariki/mokopuna, a computer suite, computer training and Wifi hotspot, public photocopying, and an information centre for residents and visitors alike. The Herald Building may also become the offices of social-and-community enterprises in future. It will be the 'nest' and coordination hub for the implementation of many Goals & Objectives identified in Tirohanga/Vision Kohukohu - Rautaki Hapori: Community Plan 2018 (see Profile Picture).

Use of funds

The funds will be used for the day-to-day running of The Herald Building including normal outgoings like rent (nominal), power, internet & phone, plus small projects of all kinds generated by people in our community.
