Baby Kai (aka Moloka’i) and I have had a long night. Checked on him at about 12am and something just wasn’t right. Did the usual - check temp, check weight - as you do in a kitten this young and his temp was normal but on the high side and he had lost 25g from his vet check which means he would have missed his 9 week gain completely! So I jumped into action and started syringing him urgent care AD wet food watered down as he would not eat out of a bowl, and he kept spitting it out and letting it flood out of his mouth. AD is like cat McDonald’s but nutritious, so this was a huge alarm bell! Switched over to pet milk mixed with saline, actual McDonald’s for cats, and he spat that out too. Ok, so now I’m panicking. I do the pinch test and his skin takes ages to return to flat from the tent position. Extremely dehydrated. I checked his siblings and they’re all fine and fat so and gobbling up wet food! So I’m trying to stay calm because at this stage his temp was 39.0. The highest a cat can be before they need medical attention is 39.1 - so we were still in the green, just. I try a little bit longer to get fluids in him but it just keeps pouring out of his mouth, so I call Manukau After Hours Vet and explain all his symptoms and they say he needs help now and to bring him in. So I wake up poor Georgia and she almost has a heart attack but eventually she realises the situation and throws on some clothes and holds Baby Kai on her lap in his carrier as I boost down the southern motorway at 1:30am. By the time the vet saw him his temp was over 40 degrees Celsius so thank god I checked on him when I did!!! He had subcutaneous fluids, and an antibiotic injection, and antibiotics to take home and if he isn’t picking up in the morning we are off to Care Vets Mt Wellington for another check over - the only vet I know that has some sort of trained staff on roster on a Sunday that treats LMA Kittens.

Bless Lonely Miaow, as no funds have been released yet from Give A Little they have allowed me to charge Moloka’i’s emergency visit to their account as long as I reimburse them when funds become available. Which means we need even more help, as with this added bill we are even further away from covering all the costs of the Kittens.

Please if you have anything to spare, please drop a dime our way so we can get Moloka’i back on track!

I have attached a pic of the bill to verify the cost of his emergency appointment tonight. Circled in red is the amount I owe LMA for the visit.

So we got him at 2:50am. As Moloka’i has to be isolated from his siblings, I have had to disinfect a crate for him to sleep in and set it all up. So now it’s almost 4am and Baby Kai has fallen asleep on my chest. But he is so worth it ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  • Vet trip, and more playtime!

      9 April 2018

Our foster mummy took us to the vet on Friday and she said the vet told her it was our 8 week birthday! We are growing so big and strong! We are all 800g apart from Maui who is 720g - but that’s OK as he was only 658g when mummy found him last Monday which means he is catching up really fast!!

We had our first shot and we were all really brave!!

  • Mama and Baby Spotted

      5 April 2018

The case of the Kona Kittens is unfolding.

Our groomer advised me he spotted the mama cat with one more kitten (another ginger like Molokai) roaming the yard looking for the rest of the gang.

With this information in mind, I will also be using any surplus funds to TNR Mama cat and hopefully catch and rehome the final kitten.

I attempted to catch the mama cat for 3 months starting August last year when I spotted her at work, but she caught on to me and has been a very clever miss. We have watched her use her paws as hands and poke them through the bars of the trap and scoop food out and eat it off her paws!

I have had help over the summer season with a member of public feeding her three times a week and setting traps for her, but she is just too cunning!

We have named her Possum for her cunning ways.

We got him!!! Meet Maui, 658g of pure cuteness!! He has been alone on the streets in an unfamiliar area since Wednesday and I was getting seriously concerned that we had lost him for good. Until today, when I spotted a fresh poop that looked extremely like his siblings poops and I just knew he must still be around somewhere! So we put the trap out again, at about 2pm, and at 6:30pm I got a knock on my door with this cute little parcel. My cat whisperer friend, Iris, stopped by on her way to dinner and there he was! We don’t usually leave a trap unattended, but with the work week starting again tomorrow and the yard where he was hiding about to refill with loud cars and technicians, we knew we just had to do everything we could and he was NOT hanging about with us there!

I am so happy to reunite Maui with his siblings, and doesn’t he look so much like his sister Hanalei??? 😻😻😻

I have given him a meal of extremely watered down A/D wet food with some protec mixed in to get his calories up and support his little guts and I am sure he will beef up in no time!!!

  • Breakfast!

      30 March 2018

The kittens are getting a little bit more confident, but have not quite worked out the litter tray situation!

We have located the general area the escaped kitten is in and hopefully we will be successful and trapping them soon!!

  • Bath time!

The kittens had a sponge bath as were very dirty, covered in oil and all sorts. Soaked some baby wipes in warm water and they seemed to enjoy it! They are very terrified but super brave!

Not too many fleas, but flea dirt in abundance so they’re hiding somewhere, they also have fat pukus so I have given them some milbemax for kittens.

The little black and white girl has blisters on her rear pads so she has possibly burnt them on the engine. I have asked for a vet opinion on them.
