To help kids with financial pressures in repatriating their Dad's body and more.
Bay of Plenty
On 5th March 2018 Richard Welch headed to Tonj, South Sudan for two months to help build a maternity ward for Macloed’s on a Mission. This was very typical of Richard, always wanting to help those in need. Two weeks into his time in Tonj Richard become unwell with an illness they call ‘Tonj Tummy’. He was put on antibiotics and appeared to be recovering. On Saturday morning, 31 March (1 month into his time in Tonj) Richard collapsed and subsequently passed away from what the doctors believe to be Sudden Cardiac Death due to a massive heart attack. This has been a big shock and devastating news for all who knew him, but particularly for his four children – Jenna, Annie, Elijah and Bastien.
We have set up this page for the kids so that they can take the proper time to grieve and not have to deal with the financial pressures. All funds raised will go to help the children particularly with:
1. Repatriating Richard’s body from Tonj to Nairobi where he will be cremated and then to home. (The cost for this is just under $15,000 NZD). Elijah, Richard’s oldest son is currently in Nairobi to pick up his ashes.
2. Immediate expenses such as the funeral and day-to-day living while Richard’s estate is being sorted out and while the kids get on their feet.
We appreciate all that you can do to help out.
Sue and Phil.
This page is set up by Sue and Phil. Sue is Richard's sister (the kids Aunty) and Phil is Richard's close friend (an Uncle to the kids)
All costs will first go towards repatriating Richard's body and then to help the kids with immediate expenses. Please note that the funds will be managed by Sue, Phil and Annie.
