Help Tawhai to achieve his bucket list with us, creating valuable memories for our children to cherish
Greymouth, West Coast
In 2019 my husband was in the prime of his career, working as a very successful and skilled sheep Shearer, until one day he suddenly collapsed which created a ripple of further collapses. After multiple tests and procedures he was diagnosed with an incurable cancer called Multiple myeloma. This came as a huge shock to our whānau as he was only 30 years old at the time.
Multiple myeloma is a rare blood cancer that originates from malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. Healthy plasma cells produce antibodies to fight infection, but cancerous myeloma cells multiply uncontrollably and produce abnormal, non-functional antibodies called M proteins. These M proteins can cause organ damage throughout the body, particularly affecting the bones and kidneys.
Since diagnosis Tawhai has had several rounds of chemotherapy and 2 stem cell transplants with 2 relapses. Recently he suffered a severely broken arm due to the cancer creating lesions in his upper right arm, causing him to have surgery. Our most recent talk with his haemotologist has come with disheartening news, the treatment he is currently on ( lenolidomide) is not working, and he is being changed to the only other funded treatment ( pomalidomide). This givealittle page has been created to help Tawhai achieve his bucket list, to make core memories with whānau particularly myself and our 4 children 16,11,10&9.
Tawhai is the most loving dad and partner and our hearts are breaking knowing we have little time left with him.
My beautiful husband, and best friend. The best dad to our babies, a loved son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
The money will be spent on fulfilling a bucket list Tawhai has written, and to help with the financial burdens of only having one income in a 6 person whānau. Memories are important more now than ever. It will also go towards a vowel renewal ceremony.

Update 8/7/2026 8 February 2026
We are Day 11 into our journey, most days have been pretty rough with Tawhai needing blood products, platelets, immunoglobulins, potassium and calcium either everyday or every 2nd day
He has been in extreme pain, which has been very hard to watch, but thankfully they have managed to find a bit of a balance, enough for him to be as normal as he can. We have celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary, and Tawhai turning 37 so far!
There have been some developments from a CT scan which have been quite scary for us. They have found new lesions on the spine that are getting dangerously close to disrupting the spinal cord. This they intend to try to shrink immediately with radiation therapy. There has also been lesions found on the right side of Tawhais skull, which are going to be targeted with chemotherapy. We are awaiting PET scan results, another MRI and Xray of his jaw as he has lost feeling in it, which may be connected to the skull lesions. We are a little nervous of what next week may bring, it can all get real very quickly. What we are so grateful for is the chance to try and get these combined lesions under control. We have the most amazing team of doctors and nurses and are very hopeful for a positive outcome ❤️
Being away from our children brings tears over the course of each day, but we are happy they are safe, stable and able to have normality. We are very blessed to have our sister. Not many people could drop everything and move their life to help.
