Community school needs to create a safer and healthier environment for children to learn new skills.
Otago
I was recently made redundant in New Zealand and have taken the opportunity to offer my services voluntarily to a community school just outside Siem Reap in Cambodia. The children who attend the school, approximately 300 kids, do so in their own time in order to learn English, Chinese, Maths and Computer Skills. Their ages are between 4 and 18 years old.
Cambodia is not a wealthy country and it is still recovering from some very hard times in the 1970's. Community schools rely on donations from parents and others to pay their full time teachers and the bills. Money that most Cambodian families simply do not have to spare.
This Learning Centre needs help to rebuild the floors in 4 of the 5 classrooms. One room which was in a very bad way was repaired last week paid by donations from another volunteer and her fiends. By repairing the floors, the children are learning in a safer and healthier environment and I am really hoping that New Zealand can contribute in a small way.
I would really like to use any surplus funds to have the electricity supply checked as on a daily basis myself and others receive shocks from using electrical appliances, including the computers in the learning lab.
Cambodia is a beautiful country with beautiful people. Their smiles brighten up any day. Please help. Just 1 Dollar will make a huge difference.
For those who would like to have more detail, following is the email received from the Principal of the School:
Dear All Previous and Current Volunteers,
Warmest greeting from Salariin Kampuchea School!
How are you doing? So far after you left us, we miss you all with the great
memories!
I hope you all are doing well!
I am writing to you in this email for seeking for your support and help. We
are making and building tile floors in our classes because of
linoleum/plastic carpets are broken for all classrooms. Thus, it remains
lots of dust when we clean it up. We want our children, students and
teachers have good health conditions while attending in our classes, unless
we have tile floors.
At the moment, our current volunteer, Linde from Holland has donated for
400$ to build one classroom with tile floor. However, we want to build
other 4 classrooms but we do not have enough money to do it. So I would
like to ask you for any contribution and donations to fulfill missing gaps
and cost remains. It is your kindness so it does not matter how much you
donate and contribute to the cost remains.
In the attach, I have sent you the budget plan for the five classrooms
floors and breakdown to one classroom tile floor with name of volunteers
donated.
You gather together and involve on this matter, it can make it happens!
Thank you very much in advance for your kind support and donation.
Best wishes,
Salariin Kampuchea Team,
Ravy
I am currently working as a volunteer at this NGO Community run school for children wanting to learn English, Chinese, Maths and Computer Skills. The school desperately needs to perform some much needed repairs to the classroom floors and they need assistance with the funding for work and materials.
Rebuilding floors in 4 of 5 classrooms and general repairs to the school buildings. Any surplus to be completely donated to the school for books and other repairs.
