Solo Māori dad fighting for legal custody and NZ residency to keep his three children safe, educated, and rooted in their whenua.
Porirua, Wellington
Kia ora, my name is John. I’m a proud Māori father raising my three tamariki on my own. We returned to Aotearoa to reconnect with our Ngāpuhi roots, but now face complex legal and immigration challenges.
I’ve already spent over $14,000 in legal costs. Because I am a citizen by descent, I need to apply separately for their residency — which costs $3,200 per child. Without residency, they cannot attend school on visitor visas. It feels unfair and financially overwhelming.
Their connection to Aotearoa runs deep. My late mother was a beloved NZ entertainer, and my grandfather proudly wore the All Blacks jersey. This is our tūrangawaewae.
There is also a significant cost for a court-ordered custody evaluation, which could be between $5,000–$6,000. I am committed to keeping my tamariki safe, grounded in their whenua, and surrounded by their whakapapa.
Funds will cover legal costs including a custody evaluation, residency visa fees, and essential living expenses while I care full-time for my tamariki. Any excess will go toward education needs and maintaining their stability in Aotearoa.
Aloha Sharon, Mahalo nui loa for your incredible mana’o and even more for your prayers and love. Knowing you’re sending that aloha all the way from Washington means the world to me and my keiki. Your message touched me deep — it reminded me why we keep going even when things get hard. We feel your mana and your heart. Wish I could give you one big mahalo hug in person. Until then, just know we’re so grateful for you. With love and aloha, Junior John & my keiki
Whoever you are, wherever you are… thank you. Your incredible generosity came through at a time when we needed it most, and I just want you to know we don’t take it lightly. Me and my tamariki are deeply grateful. Even without a message, the mana of your action spoke volumes. You’ve helped us keep this dream alive. Ngā mihi nui, Junior John & tamariki
