After losing approximately 30kg and months of deteriorating health, 17yr old Toby urgently needs help accessing medical investigations.
Oamaru, Otago
Over the past eight months, our boy Toby (17) has been experiencing serious bowel problems that have turned his world upside down. He has lost approximately 30kg, is struggling to eat and is constantly exhausted.
He experiences pain and severe bleeding, has developed a major toilet aversion because he’s terrified by what his body is going through.
We’ve watched him lose his confidence, independence and enjoyment of life. The boy who once had so much energy is becoming increasingly withdrawn.
Tests have revealed extremely high levels of bowel inflammation, raising serious concerns about his health.
Despite months of seeking help through the public system, Toby remains without the investigations he desperately needs. Because of his autism, he requires a general anaesthetic, making it difficult to coordinate. The complexity is why it’s been classified as only semi-urgent, with no date in sight, but his medical needs are no less urgent because he has a disability.
Recently, we spoke with a private specialist, and he was adamant that these investigations are extremely urgent. Unfortunately, we have still received no direct communication from the public service regarding a date.
We’ve secured a private colonoscopy and MRI for the 18th of November, at an estimated cost of $8,000.
We never imagined asking for help to access healthcare for our son, but we cannot continue watching him deteriorate while waiting for answers.
Any contribution or share would mean the world to our family.
We are Toby’s parents. Due to his significant autism-related support needs, we manage his healthcare and finances on his behalf, including arranging medical appointments and organising this fundraiser to help cover his urgent treatment costs.
Donations will help pay for Toby’s urgent colonoscopy, MRI, general anaesthetic and associated hospital and specialist fees. If we don’t reach our target, every dollar raised will still go towards these investigations, with us covering any shortfall.
