Help us construct a switchback wheelchair ramp so Zacchaeus Ulusa can get to class!
Auckland
Zacchaeus Ulusa is an 11-year old fun-loving boy, who recently relocated to Sāmoa with his family from NZ. He suffers from a deteriorating neurological condition called Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT), where he is slowly losing the full function of his arms and legs. This has resulted in him relying on the use of a wheelchair to get around. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for his strand of CMT to date.
Whilst NZ has an established support stream for peoples living with disability, the same is far from a reality for the disabled community living in Sāmoa. So when Zacchaeus Ulusa turned up to his local village school on the first day, he encountered a school with no access to the top floor of the schools 2-storey complex.
The accumulation of generosity funds raised will all go towards the purchase of the materials needed to construct the ramp including safety rails and roof due to the heat & wet tropical weather, which can be a safety hazard in Sāmoa. The amount will also cover the cost of builders.
The ramp will not only help Ulusa get to class, but the incoming wheelchair bound students and their elderly helpers because the current steps are too steep. In researching for this project, we discovered that 15 wheelchair students were turned away over the last 10-years due to inaccessible facilities. Whilst education is a universal right, it is not the reality for our disabled young minds. We appreciate your generosity and appreciate whatever you can give in support.
Fa'afetai tele.
Ulusa is our eldest child of 3 and our only son who lives with a medical condition called Charcot Marie Tooth
The money will cover the complete procurement and construction of a switchback wheelchair ramp so Ulusa and fellow wheelchair students can get to class.
