🕊️ Help Us Build a Flight Aviary for Wellingtons Kererū

$875 of $3,500 goal
Given by 15 generous donors in around 5 months

We are Wellington’s only DOC permitted bird hospital outside of the Zoo, we need your help to build a flight aviary for our cities kererū.

Korokoro, Lower Hutt

🩹 🐦 🏥 Flock Birdcare Wellington is a small DOC-permitted bird hospital entirely self funded and by volunteers and donations.

🪺 🌱💕 We care for sick, injured, and orphaned native and introduced birds, helping them recover and prepare for release back into the wild.

Flock is now the only DOC permitted bird rehabilitation facility in Wellington besides The Nest at Wellington Zoo.

⚠️ But, we can't accept kererū just yet. First we need to complete a purpose built 4x2m predator proof flight aviary.

Once the aviary is complete, kererū will have a safe species appropriate space to recover, rebuild strength, and return to the wild right here in Wellington.

Every donation goes directly towards building this aviary and creating that lifeline for kererū.

Ngā mihi nui for supporting our work. Together, we can make Wellington a safer place for our birds 🤝🥬🦆

DOC permitted bird hospital in Lower Hutt, run and funded by volunteers & donations. Our vets are Avian Empire, we are WReNNZ members supported by local vet clinics and the SPCA. Donations go into a dedicated account for operations and aviary costs

Use of funds

Funds will go towards purchasing and labor to build a 4x2m predator-proof flight aviary for rehabilitating native birds. If we don’t meet our target, donations will still support native bird care and facility upgrades to meet DOC standards.

We got our doc permit 💫🐦 🙌  25 September 2025

We are now DOC permitted!

We are excited to share that Flock Birdcare Wellington is now officially DOC permitted. This means we can accept native birds into care under our permit conditions.

Our permit covers tūī, pīwakawaka (fantails), tauhou (silvereyes), and riroriro (grey warblers). The one exception is kererū, which we cannot take until we complete our purpose built 4x2m flight aviary.

This makes Flock the only DOC permitted bird hospital in Wellington outside of the Zoo. Run and funded entirely by volunteers and donations, this milestone would not have been possible without your support.

Every donation to this page helps us take the next step, building the aviary so we can also accept kererū into care.

Ngā mihi nui for helping us make this happen

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
