We're developing a native area of sanctuary within the OARC for the use of all - people, flora & fauna - to improve education and wellbeing.
Christchurch, Canterbury
Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park is a volunteer Group committed to establishing a native ecosystem within the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor by planting suitable areas and maintaining the pockets of native strands that already exist in the river corridor.
Our Vision is for the development of Forest Park open to all that includes areas for education, sympathetic recreation, community engagement and an area of native habitat that will enable our native species to thrive in Christchurch and for it to become a significant waypoint for migrating species.
Our largest commitment is for the development of our site around Brooker Reserve on Brooker Ave between the Avon-Ōtākaro River and Travis Wetland - an area which may one day become part of the Waitākiri Eco Sanctuary.
With the support of Hummingbird Coffee and The Green Lab we have recently developed a nature-play area in the Park and want to continue to develop the entire area. We enjoy strong relationships and support from Conservation Volunteers, Corrections, Trees the Count, Trees for Canterbury and the Christchurch City Council, but as a small group of dedicated volunteers we are always on the look out for more support to help make the dream of a native park for Christchurch a reality.
