Hot Meals For War-Weary Ukrainians

  • Overdue Update!

Our mission in Ukraine has just ended, and Jason and I are back in our home countries. We are exhausted, mentally and physically, but we are happy. We achieved more than we could have hoped for, and fed almost 1,000 people more than on our previous mission.

We have left Ukraine with heavy hearts though. Days after leaving the country, Russia launched one of the most deadly attacks of the war. Villages that we delivered fresh food and hygiene supplies to only a few weeks ago have now been evacuated. More and more land is slowly being occupied and hope for peace feels further than ever before.

Our impact in Ukraine is small, we are only two people. But behind us stands YOU and all the New Zealanders who have supported us, and believed in Ukraine and its right to an independent future. While Jason and I aren't in Ukraine, we ask you to continue your support for the country in whatever way you can. This doesn't need to be financial. It can be as simple as improving your knowledge on the situation and being able to detect misinformation surrounding the war.

We would also like to make ourselves available for any questions you might have. You can connect with us through our Facebook page.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all of you. You have helped us spread hope in Ukraine and see that there is still so much more light out there than darkness.

We will have some plans coming up that we will announce soon. Please keep and eye out. Thank you

  • Long days, drone attacks and lots of smiles

We have been very busy since my last update! We started off this trip by helping YWAM Kyiv with their project called Waves of Hope. Five villages in the Mykolaiv region received new houses that were gifted to residents who had lost their own because of the war. These houses were built by a team of 110 incredible volunteers and we fed them. This resulted in 18 hour days for us but it was so worth it. Nothing beats seeing people literally cheering when you arrive with their lunch.

This was a huge logistical effort, with multiple building teams spread out across the region, all requiring lunch on site and on time! But this is what we are good at.

Then it was time to return to our base in Kharkiv. A few days prior, while we were still in Mykolaiv, Russia launched a massive drone attack across Ukraine. Kharkiv was particularly badly hit. Many people were killed and injured. It was heartbreaking to see this happen to the city we love. Somehow, our apartment was unscathed which was a blessing because it was time to start serving towns in the Kharkiv Oblast.

Our first village was Cherkaski Tyshky, which had been devastated by fighting at the start of the war. We brought a lunch of pork and eggplant ragu, pasta, homemade chocolate chip cookies and a selection of drinks. Lots of hugs, smiles and requests for seconds.

Our Facebook page has more information and photos from our past few weeks.

As always, thank you for making this possible.

  • Finally in Ukraine!

Yesterday we crossed the border into Ukraine. It is always a surreal experience with a huge mix of emotions. We are excited to see all the people we care about, to continue our project and keep supporting Ukraine in whatever small way we can. Support that you have all made possible. We come here with the pride of knowing that Kiwis thousands of kilometers away care.

We also come with a lot of trepidation. Uncertainty of how this conflict will be resolved seem to grow everyday.

We can't fix the war but we sure can be a light in the darkness and I like to think that counts for something.

We will be posting updates to our Facebook page. If anyone would like to join our email newsletters then please send us a message to neveralone.ua@gmail.com

  • Overwhelming support!

      9 May 2025

It is impossible to express our gratitude for the incredible support that has been shown by hundreds of New Zealanders. Many of you have left beautiful comments saying that we make you proud to be Kiwis. I am the one that is proud to be able to count myself amongst all of you. Your love and generosity will be felt in Ukraine. Thank you
