Help us save Freddie's sight!

  • Fred again!

As it is Matariki, Māori New Year, we feel it's a perfect time to send an update on Freddie.

It's been a year since he received corneal neurotization surgery (CN) as a result of your incredible generosity. We've had big ups and downs since then but we always knew we would. The aim of CN is to promote feeling, healing & sensation in the eyes. The process of nerve activation post surgery takes 12-18 months minimum, so for the past year Freddie's eyes have still been vulnerable to damage. Over his short life he has suffered several eye infections & abrasions leaving him with significant scarring which has impaired his vision. One of the potential outcomes of CN was that this scarring might reduce. At Tuesday's eye check up Fred's opthomologist reported that he's never seen his eyes looking so good. The scarring has almost gone, red reflexes are shining through, the eyes are beautifully white & clear with no defects. We are all very confident that Freddie is slowly beginning to gain sensation in his eyes. We've been observing an increase in his overall eye health & enjoying many weeks of zero eye problems & no need for hospital appointments or intervention. There's still a long way to go but the changes we're seeing are SO exciting, giving us great hope for the future. In other news Fred has progressed from crawling to walking with a little frame & he has started at preschool, which he loves. We're so grateful & want to thankyou all again for your support.

    Luv, M,J, F & L xox

It's been 4 months since we closed our Freddie GiveaLittle page. We're acutely aware that our supporters are well overdue an update! Life has been a whirlwind.

Due to your immense generosity, our family of 4 travelled to the USA in May where Freddie received Corneal Neurotization at Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis. Dr Gregory Borschel and Dr Charline Boente worked on him for 8-10 hours. We are deeply appreciative of their care and exceptional skill. ( Please see photo attached of The Riley Dream Team! )

Freddie has gone through a lot. It's taking him time to recover from the various aspects of surgery but overall, he is doing great. We're observing a really significant improvement / fading in the scarring on his eyes and while there's a long road ahead, this development gives us great hope that the surgery is doing what it's intended to do. ♥

For the first time in months, Freddie is heading back to his beloved daycare for 2 days this week. 😊 This hasn't been an easy time, in fact, it's been VERY intense. But 100 % worth it.

We cannot thank you enough for your generosity in making this life changing procedure possible. Not only the funds, but so too, the generosity of spirit, support and friendship. We're beyond grateful for you all, here in Aotearoa, NZ and abroad, your donations have been life changing for our little guy. We hope to help other families access this surgery in future as it remains prohibitively expensive. We feel so fortunate!!

    ♥ Mon, Joe, F & L

As we close our Givealittle page, we want to express our gratitude and love to all of you who've supported us on this journey.

Because of your generous donations our fundraising campaign reached its target within two weeks....WILD!! This meant things could move a whole lot faster than we'd ever expected.

So, we are booked to fly to the States next month and Freddie's surgery is scheduled for early June.

    All systems are GO!

With huge thanks to you, Freddie will continue to enjoy life's many wonderful and beautiful experiences. The adoration of books being his latest found love. 💕

    Much love,

    Mon, Joe, Freddie and Luca

      Wonderful news! X

  • It's been a hectic 2 weeks!

Its been exactly two weeks since we launched our Givealittle page. Turns out, we weren't prepared for the incredible momentum which it gathered!

You all responded so quickly to our call for help and subsequently so did Riley Children's Hospital...herefore , so did we!

Last night Dr Borschel ( Freddie's surgeon in The States) confirmed that Freddie is booked for surgery in early June!

And after many hours on the phone to Air NZ over the weekend, our flights are booked!

Then today, a most hilarious little passport arrived in the mail!

We're very taken aback that donations continue to flow for Freddie! Please know that this is all going directly to him: to the costs associated with making our flights to The States happen much sooner than expected, to Freddie's post surgery follow ups and care and to his long term physio, occupational therapy and speech language therapy costs.

Anyone raising a child with a rare condition in NZ will know that it's an extremely expensive task, so any additional cents are making a life changing, long term impact for Freddie and our family.

    Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!

If you'd like to support Freddie on his journey to the USA and beyond, we manage a little Instagram account for him:

    @fantastic_mr_freds

We'd love to have you along for the many crazy adventures Freddie takes us on in this life! 😂

    Sooooo much love and gratitude,

Mon, Joe, Freddie and Luca 💕

We were ready for a quiet weekend... but it was not to be! Today's fundraising has absolutely blown our minds.

Thanks to Rebecca Haszard and her NZ Herald article, this evening we reached the point of being just $9000 away from our Givealittle goal. We have not been able to keep up the personalised thankyous to each donor on this page.

I'm aware people might be growing weary of us thanking everyone profusely but honestly, we're not sure what else to do or say at this point!

Throughout this fundraising process we've been hearing about numerous amazing efforts which individuals around the world have taken to help raise funds for Freddie.  We really want to acknowledge some of these generous acts of kindness:

    - A talented friend and artist in Washington State (also mum to a PTCD child) auctioned off a piece of her beautiful hand crafted jewellery.

    - Freddie's amazing day care have been holding bake sales!

    - Freddie's cousins have been making and selling paintings, jewelry and cookies.

    - Kids have been doing household chores and donating their hard earned dollars...to Freddie!!

    - A friend in Illinois is holding a Freddie fundraising dinner.

    - A friend in Auckland has been selling prints and greeting cards of her photography.

    - Friends in Dunedin are selling their homegrown dahlias-by-the-bundle in a pop up store in the central city.

    - Friends have offered free tandem paragliding flights for us to auction off.

There may well be other homegrown initiatives which we aren't even aware of !!!

So, please accept another massive thanks to Every.Single.One Of You for your huge generosity and kindness.

We look forward to telling Freddie about all of you one day.

    Loads of love,

    Mon & Joe

  • Exciting news!

Last night we received some amazing news from Riley Childrens Hospital.

Freddie's eye surgery - scheduled for September- is now able to be performed... as soon as June!

This is far sooner than we'd ever hoped or dreamed!

But in order for this to happen, we need to raise enough funds to cover the surgery cost ( $120,000 NZD) by the end of April. 🙈

    We are SO CLOSE!

Can you further help us reach this goal?

Please, if you're comfortable doing so, share our Givealittle page around your friends and family 💕

And help us get this fundraiser over the line to save Freddie's sight! 👀

With so much love & thanks, Mon, Joe, Freds & Baby Luca. Xxx

  • The Gift of Sight 💕

      14 March 2023
    Main image

When we started this fundraising campaign our aim was to individually thank everyone who donated. These last two days it's become increasingly difficult. We've become aware of so many people from different walks life giving and engaging so generously: family, friends, friends of family, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends, university students, school students and families, travel friends, old friends, new friends, random friends, parents of friends, strangers... and the list goes on.

We are utterly overwhelmed! And beginning to believe this mammoth ask could become a reality. We look forward to one day telling Freddie that hundreds of caring people gave him the gift of sight. Thankyou so so much!

    Dear Supporters,

Because of you, The Freddie Surgery Fund has received over $66,000 in just four days! Never did we imagine such an immense response. We are so moved, not only by the hefty financial contribution toward Freddie's surgery but also the words of encouragement and affirmation, and the generosity of spirit you've all shown. We are feeling deeply cared for. Thankyou!

We'd like to introduce you to Dr Gregory Borshel, who would perform CN on Freddie. He has operated on a number of PTCD children and cares deeply about each and every one of his patients. We're super grateful for the support he has shown our family and are so looking forward to meeting him in person later this year! 🤞🏼

    With huge love and thanks,

    Mon & Joe
