We are rowing 15 hours straight to raise money to help keep our local Kaikoura Coastguard Crew trained and equipped ready for all callouts.
Kaikoura, Canterbury
The Kaikoura Coastguard rely on volunteers, donations and funding to make sure they have the gear and training needed for their crew, this way they are ready for any type of callout.
There are 24 crew on the roster. Including Recruits, Deck hands, Qualified crew, Senior crew, plus our two Coastguard certified Skippers. They cover an area from Cape Campbell to the Conway out to 12 nautical miles out to sea (a very large area)
The CRV Kaikoura Rescue boat is a highly specialised 12.3m, twin jet-propelled vessel capable of covering the large area and handling all but the most severe sea conditions.
Infrequently (fortunately) there are searches for missing divers/swimmers and sadly the occasional fatality.
Many of the callouts however, are for mechanical issues that usually result in a tow back to the marina. Others are for the rescue of vessels caught out by changing weather, and small vessels / kayaks that are blown out to sea, or onto rocks.
The Kaikoura Coastguard crew need to be trained to respond to this wide range of situations.
Currently the Kaikoura Coastguard receive a good portion of their income from donations, fundraising, such as selling raffles, working at the A & P show for the organizers, hosting a dive competition etc. They also apply for grants from the likes of COGS and the Rata foundation.
Any proceeds raised will go towards resources, equipment and potentially training days/weekends/weeks.
I am the Owner/manager of Central Fitness Kaikoura. Some of the Coastguard crew are members of the gym and we have heard through them and members of the community of the work the Coastguard do and we are just keen to support them and what they do for the people in this town and the surrounding ones
The money raised will go towards crew training days, weekends and weeks as well as equipment and/or resources.
